COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pale 31 is an ode to our home state of California—the 31st to be named in fact. Beer may not be associated with terroir the way wine is, but we believe that where we’re from impacts how our beers taste. This California Style Pale Ale represents the bold yet approachable spirit that embodies our state. A crisp floral hop aroma precedes a medium-body and clean finish.

On tap at Memphis Taproom. Pours clean golden. Nose is fairly pungent floral, grassy hops, sweet malt. Taste doesn’t quite live up to the nose but solid grassy hops, honey. Light body. Solid

On tap at Big Star in Chicago, used mostly as a back up to some fine whiskey and to wash down some smokin’ tacos. Nicely bitter, fresh, and not too hoppy. Crisp and refreshing.

355ml bottle. Minimally cloudy, deep orangey golden colour with average frothy moderately lacing white head. Superb floral hop aroma, slightly sweet caramel malty undertone. Initially slightly biting hoppy taste, cristal clear middle part, a minimal fruity touch right before the finish. Very nice!

Pours a brilliantly clear light golden amber color with a medium size head. The foamy cap is fairly dense and has a tan color. Carbonation is medium to weak. This is quite a pale pale ale. This beer does not lack for aromatics. The hop bouquet is big and bright with aromas of grass floral and pine. Malts are understated and weak. Flavor finds a nice hoppy ale, just right I think for a pale ale. Malts and hops balance nicely with a godd biscuit malt finish. Unfortunately on the palette the beer presents itself as watery and rather weak. Its smooth with a semi-dry finish. This is a California style APA and I couldn’t find any info about that style. Maybe a hoppy steam beer. I thought this beer pretty good even with the lighter taste, could be a session or yard beer perhaps.

Tap at brewery. Clear golden pour with a steady white head. Aroma is dank floral hops with pine and a bit of citrus over a dry, biscuity malt backbone. Impressive pungency on the aroma. Taste is clean, dry hop bitterness with balancing dry bready malt and a spike of pine/bitterness into the finish. Mouthfeel is spot f-ing on for the style. Brilliant beer. Flawless.

Tap at Hopmonk Sonoma - under the alias of Hopmonk Tavern Ale. Clear light gold pour wih a small soapy white head. Nice floral hop character in this one - easy drinking and enjoyable.

Golden, clear beer with a greenish sheen; small yellowish head. Grapey hops, dry hopbales, slightly fishy-salty. Dry bitterish, again a mineral component, but with a bit lame finish. Very spritzily carbonated. Underwhelming, I think the idea was not overdoing things, but they went too far... in the other direction. Somehow, that strikes me indeed as typically Californian.

Big Top, Roslyn PA variety case: Pours a golden colour with a white head. Aroma is fruity, pineapple, hoppy, and has a nice malt backbone. This is delightfully refreshing, slightly sweet, and actually a bit complex. The fruity hops cut through the malts to provide real character to the beer. I could chug this or sip it just as easily. It really is quite good.

Originally reivewed: 5/12/09. Pours a cloudy gold with a billowy white head bursting forth. Excellent retention throughout the entire drink, leaving some spotty lacing on the glass edge. Smells of malty biscuits, honey-kissed breads, and slight floral finish. Mouthfeel is crisp and clean. Flavor is of buttery bread, sweet candied malts, and finishes with just a touch of hoppy bitterness. With the low ABV and great flavor profile, this has got to be one of the most drinkable APAs I’ve ever had. I could drink these one after the other all summer long. Recommend.
