Pale 31 is an ode to our home state of California—the 31st to be named in fact. Beer may not be associated with terroir the way wine is, but we believe that where we’re from impacts how our beers taste. This California Style Pale Ale represents the bold yet approachable spirit that embodies our state. A crisp floral hop aroma precedes a medium-body and clean finish.

I liked the beer a great deal. Even though I am a hop head through and through, the dry hopping shows through in particular with the aroma and front end of the taste. It is important to note this is billed as and should be tasted as a pale ale not a robust, 70+ ibu IPA. Something I forgot upon first taste. The alcohol content is perfect for an afternoon sipper while cooking on the grill.

355ml bottle. Pours a clear deep gold, with a medium off-white head, which lasts well and leaves good lacing. Floral, orange zest and spice hops mix with caramel and white toast malt to make up the aroma. Lime and orange rind hops up front lead into subtly sweet caramel malt in the mid-palate. Lemon curd hops come in at the finish, and there is a slight floral aftertaste. This is a very well-balanced APA, with good, interesting hops flavours sitting against a nicely rounded malt body.

(Bottle). Aroma of sweet caramel, musty over ripe tropical fruits, figs and raisins. Taste of over ripe tropical fruit, caramel malt and hops. The taste is a bit watery and unfinished.

Pours a clear yellow with soapy 1 finger head. Slightly skunky aroma with hints of citrus, pine, and light sweetness. Flavor matches aroma.

January 26th, 2013 - Firestone Walker’s Pale 31 is everywhere, and probably for good reason. Southern California has taken to the hoppy stuff, and Firestone Walker is the patriotic and local way to drink the bitter brews. This, like so many other APA’s, has a nice, wheat colored body and a loose, mottled head, which quickly sinks and disappears under its own weight. The aroma is sticky with sweetness, and light touches of bubble gum and cotton candy. I also detect a little fresh pear, but just a touch. The taste is similarly sweet at the start, but the sugars are quickly depressed, revealing a slightly blander mid and aftertaste. There’s a generic graininess, like a saison, and a slight sigh of pear in the background, but once that sugary flavor on the front is exhausted, I found little else to savor or appreciate. I much prefer the their IIPA, but recognize that might be flavor inflation impacting my tongue.

Bottle at Firestone Walker tasting at Beer & Beyond shop. Clear orange-golden color. Fruity and citrusy aroma, a bit stale. Moderate sweet, fruity, floral and malty, slightly sour and soapy, long bitter finish. Not fresh enough, would be happy to try it again.

UPDATED: AUG 19, 2014 Pours a light golden orange. Crystal clear with a nice thick head. Smells of orange and melon. Very dank smelling! Love it. Taste of tangy orange, bitter grapefruit, mango dance on the tongue. Light/ medium body with a nice resiny finish. This is as solid as it comes as far as a west coast style Pale Ale is concerned. Hop forward and light to medium body make this the idea pale ale.
