Parabajava ia an ongoing series exploring the infusion of coffee into our Parabola Barrel Aged Imperial Series. This first offering is a collaboration with the famed Intelligentsia Coffee Company, utilizing their El Diablo espresso blend. This beer was crated for our June 16th Father’s Day brunch at Lot 213 in L.A. The coffee brings intense coffee house espress aroma - roasty carmel, toffee, molasses and fresh ground coffee notes. The flavor melds well with the big rich character of the stout - complementary roasty flavors, dark baker’s chocolate, and more caramel which pairs well with Parabola’s rich malt and smokey oak bourbon notes. The finish is amazingly smooth and integrated. I’m pretty stoked on the results!

On tap at the HAF2014. Pours a jet black color with a medium beige head, viscous body. A big malty roasted nose, dark fruit. Wonderful beer: dark roasted coffee, dark fruit and berries, bitter black chocolates, more massive creamy coffee. A big beer, but the palate and overall balance make it drinkable.

Draft at Burgundian. Downing this magnificent beast that has long eluded me. Thanks to grandparents for taking our kid for the weekend, and thanks to Minnesota throttling my beloved Hawkeyes and giving me extra cause to drink strong at noon. Pours deep and dark, opaque but for ruby highlights around the edge. Small ring of tan bubbles. Aroma of chocolate and well-brewed coffee that integrates beautifully on the nose. Initially it covers up a lot of the other notes of Parabola, but as it warms the bourbon, vanilla, toasted coconut and marshmallows, tobacco and alcohol. Taste: coffee is big in this, with a heavily roasty, somewhat astringent bitter finish. Booze, with thick parabasweetness. The taste is the only weak point, and it’s not that weak. Palate: full body, light carbonation, velvety texture. Feels great. Overall: a decadent beer for the morning drinker.

9 oz draft pour at Brookland Pint for their grand opening. Jet black with a finger of tan head. Aromas of vanilla, roast, sweet bourbon, espresso. Tastes of roast, chocolate, bourbon, coffee/espresso. Full body with a dry and warm finish. Thick mouthfeel. Good but I prefer Parabola. The coffee seems to overtake some of the barrel character.

On draught at Saraveza during Luncheon with the Lion for the final day of PDX Beer Week. Black in color with dark tan head on the sides of the glass. Aroma is dark chocolate, dark roasted coffee, deep roasted malts, and a touch of smoke. Taste is cocoa nibs, espresso beans, cold brewed coffee, smoke, and a hint of spicy heat. The stout flavors meld well with the coffee, neither one overshadowing the other.

Draft at EBF. Really, really sweet creamed coffee, not quite Mocha Wednesday levels of sweet but definitely a bit much for me. Not nearly as complex or delicious as the base beer.

On tap at Dark Lord Day 2014. Looks perfect - dark with big mocha head. Aroma is perfect - coffee and oak. Taste is lots and lots of coffee, so much so that it takes precedence totally over the bourbon ageing. Nice but think it needs more of the coffee held in balance. Finish is bitterness from the black gold. Nice imperial stout.

sample at extreme beer fest, great barrel aging. this firestones answer to gooseisland coffee bourbon county. This is a huge roasty ashy bomb, tons of bourbon and coffee flavors, everything about this is huge and it works great.
