UPDATED: FEB 5, 2014 Bottle: thanks, Kevin! Completely black, inky pour with a light-tan head that settles quickly to a thin collar. Aroma is mild, milky cocoa, dry wheat that hints towards rye (must be the buckwheat), light plums, a small hint of anise, faint maple, & a finishing touch of vanilla. Nice underlying sweetness, almost milky but still a decent roast. Taste is sharp cocoa, milky & only slightly bittersweet with some dry buckwheat & rye, a hint of boozy oak, light vanilla, & just a touch of plum & fig fruitiness. Nice voluptuous body, pretty nice stuff. Dry buckwheat & rye-like aftertaste. More maple syrupy & bourbon as the beer warms up.

Bottle. Aroma is strong cocoa and chocolate. Dark brown pour with a light brown to off white head. Taste is chocolate and light roast. A very light, pleasant tartness behind the malt; very light though. A smooth alcohol warming. Not sure I can pick out the buckwheat, agave syrup or barrel character individually, but I like the beer.

Bottle from Sean, shared at the Homer "welcome to California" tasting. Pours opaque black with small brown head that dissipates quickly leaving little lacing. Aroma is rich, cocoa, bourbon, figs, dates, molasses. Flavor is medium sweet and light bitter, lots of bourbon presence, but well integrated and not overpowering. Not really getting tequila here, but this is a nice beer. Medium plus body, creamy. Crossed the country twice to be shared 170 miles from where it was brewed :)

Bottle. Pours opaque black with a medium, frothy beige head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is toast and cookie malt, dates and figs with earthy hops and peppery alcohol. Flavor is sweet dark malt, vanilla, oak and peppery alcohol, dark fruits and a sweet finish. Full body and medium carbonation.

Very dark brown, no foam. Sweet molasses, cherry, chocolate. Roasty bitterness, some licorice, fig, alcohol not too strong. Very nice, kind of dessert, but balanced just enough with bitterness.

The tequila barrel cancels out the buckwheat elements to make this a war of gimmicks. I taste tequila and some light roast but not an epic stout. Way overhyped and overpriced. Bottle taken out from monks cafe in Philadelphia.

Very dark brown, tan head. Barrel is heavy, bit of alc. Tequila there but not too strong. Vanilla is mixed with choc in the flavour. Good.

Bottle at CapFlu’s Blomster Bash
Dark color, close to black. The aroma is chocolatey, a hint of tequila. Full bodied; rich chocolate flavor with a good alcohol punch; hint of barrel, tobacco, liquorice.

Little head with a deep brown body. Nose of molasses and soya sauce. Hot alcohol, brown sugar and coffee grits. Very sweet and smoked. Nice.

Bottle - Sweet chocolate with a nice sugary note. Jet black with almost no head. Nice chocolate syrupy notes, light barrel notes and a sweetness that I assume is from the agave. I don’t get the tequila, which would have been nice.

Tap at Monk’s, probably 10 years old. Sepia with thin tan ring. Woody marshmallow nose, sweet and inky, light Oreo cookie. Salty soy up front, sugary mid with oats and heavy cardboard oxidation through the barky, dead finish. Slick and full, finish shows nothing but cardboard.
