UPDATED: FEB 5, 2014 Bottle: thanks, Kevin! Completely black, inky pour with a light-tan head that settles quickly to a thin collar. Aroma is mild, milky cocoa, dry wheat that hints towards rye (must be the buckwheat), light plums, a small hint of anise, faint maple, & a finishing touch of vanilla. Nice underlying sweetness, almost milky but still a decent roast. Taste is sharp cocoa, milky & only slightly bittersweet with some dry buckwheat & rye, a hint of boozy oak, light vanilla, & just a touch of plum & fig fruitiness. Nice voluptuous body, pretty nice stuff. Dry buckwheat & rye-like aftertaste. More maple syrupy & bourbon as the beer warms up.

Shared bottle at Craft. Turbid and thick blackish pour with brown head. Nose was dark malt, oaky bourbon, tequila, cacao. tasted rich, heavy malty, with pronounced notes of oaky bourbon, tequila, cacao, coffee, and a dense finish.

Birthday bomber. Pours oily black with coffee crema colored rim. Viscous for sure but not as thick as i’d expected. Nose is green tequila, rich fudge like chocolate, vanilla, oak. Taste is initially sweet, finishing clean with and slightly bitter from dark and ashy malts. Long lingering fudge, oak, and tequila finish. Alcohol is warming in the back of the throat but not overpowering. Agave presents with an earthy, spicy honeyed note. Incredible beer.

Superbe.

Black with a light brown head. Aroma is chocolate fudge, vanilla wafer, bourbon, charred wood. Full bodied, syrupy mouthfeel, lightly roasty and boozy on the palate. Taste is chocolate fudge, agave, anise. Yum.

Poured a darker brown with a beige head. Aroma was of tons of barrel, definitely mixed and not all whiskey. Flavor similar, dark fruity character, big blended barrel. Light oxidation. Good not great.

Pours a deep brown black. No head. Aromas of fudge and vanilla come through from the bourbon mostly. Some dark fruits. Maybe a hint of tequila. Medium body. Very well incorporated.

Draft on tap at APEX (Portland, OR). A fun rarer find I’ve never had. Pours a deeper blackish opaque hue, darker body and subtle brownish glow on the edges makes this a fuickle, bigger monster. Creamy frothy darker brown head atop is firmly sized, a solid layer retains well enough and laces nicely. Aromas show toast and roast, cocoa nibs and roasty coffee meet agave, oak and some tannic life. Vanilla, earth and some gentle whiskey spirit meets cocoa, coffee and some gentle tequila influence. That subtle agave gives a push of gentle life, but as it warms that Bourbon influence grows, oaky and a bit warm. Nice, potent and alluring stuff. Initial is fuller bodied, caramel and cocoa meet vanillin, some espresso and more cocoa. Biscuity and caramel malts provide enough girth to support with prickly and tannic bourbon coming into play. Some decent spirit warmth, toasty roast and gentle agave residual elements kinda snap into the middle and backend. A subtle spiciness, the Tequila element is earthy, a touch spicy for a brief moment. A full enough body that doesn’t end up overbarreled or thin. That spiciness, dry toasty and tannic appeal mixes with firm biscuity and roasty carmelized appeal. Cocoa, some more tannic oak as that agave element is fleeting and gone. A firm enough body hangs on with lingering deeper and darker malt elements, tapering Bourbon barrel, a lot more nib and cacao appeal as we finish and lingering on the palate for revisits. Certainly a unique spin with that Agave and Tequila waft, but an equally appropriate and flavorful Imperial Stout base, Bourbon dominance and masterful aging choice (without it ending up pverdone or too underdone and sticky or sweet). Fun stuff. Solid nose and very alluring pour lead to good flavors, palate score and overall complex flow. Honor to try.

Pitch black and opaque wih a two finger, frothy mocha head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Great retention for the style with streaks of soapy lacing coating the glass on the way down. Inviting nose with a really strong barrel character that’s nicely integrated into whatever the base beer is. Plenty of damp oak, spicy bourbon, vanilla and coconut countered by sweet and roasted dark malt notes. Subtle agave/tequila presence but it’s overpowered by the bourbon and oak notes. Wouldn’t have guessed it was in there if I didn’t know. Spicy bourbon and vanilla bean flavor followed by gourmet roast, dark chocolate and sweeter, dessert-like bakers chocolate sweetness. Smells great, I just wish that the tequila/agave was stronger/more noticeable in the aroma. Thick and viscous full body with a strong boozy barrel presence that gives off a lot of heat and spicy bourbon flavor that lingers over the malt backbone into a sweet, slightly dry and hot finish. Plenty of warmth in the chest. Agave syrup and tequilla stands out here more than in the nose with a subtle citrus/honey character but again it’s overshadowed by the oak and spicy bourbon. Subtle toothpick/dry oak flavor with some vanilla, coconut and burnt sugar. Huge spicy bourbon flavor countered by a nice tequila presence that starts to stand out as it warms. Thankfully, the prominent barrel notes don’t obliterate the malt flavors with plenty of roasted espresso bean, oatmeal and bittersweet dark chocolate. A little bit of dark fruit in there as well with some fig, plum and raisin. More tequila/agave than in the nose but the flavor profile isn’t quite as complex. Needs some more malt sweetness and it’s a bit too hot/boozy at this point for my preference. It burns a bit going down and you can feel all 13+%! This becomes more tolerable as it warms and the palate adjusts but it seems like it needs some time to mellow out.

2013 22oz. Thanks to tyrus for sharing. Never went after this as I’m not at all a tequila fan, and the tequila notes really stuck out on fresh 16. This was a different story. I wouldn’t have guessed this was tequila beer. It was more of a perfectly balanced bourbon stout. Oak and vanilla. Smooth spirit. Chewy toasty body. There was a bit of sweet tequila agave on the back end but nothing harsh. Really enjoyable.

Bottle at all killer no filler. Aroma is vanilla, cocoa and slight heat. Taste is cocoa, slight vanilla, a touch of tequila (not overpowering), a hint of cinnamon and a touch of roast coffee.
