Our first foray into the funky world of lambic style beers. These traditional Belgian style ales are exposed to both wild yeast and bacteria, as well as the addition of fruit, during the secondary fermentation. Ours began back in 2010, with the blend of two wheat ales and inoculated with Brettanomyces Lambicus, Brettanomyces Bruxellensis and lactobacillus. We then added ollalieberries—no, that’s not a typo—and waited patiently for two years! The result is amazing: a distinctively, dry, cidery, fruity, vinuous and oh-so sour beer. Bracing and refreshing.

Really nice fruited AWA, with a good hint of berry sweetness, nice coloration, and well-balanced tartness.

Bottle thanks to Nick. Pours a hazy purple with medium frothy off white head that diminishes quickly. The aroma is strong berries, brett, and vinegar. Thin mouth, nice sour berries, currants, tart finish, really enjoyed this.

375ml bottle courtesy of an extra via trade. Need to collect a few of the missing Barrelworks still. Pours an impressive deep crimson hue, lush berry tinged glow and decent darker haze. Cranberry juice, red wine and decent glow strikes in all lights. A frothy whitish/pink head atop stays as a mellow layer, decent ringer atop retains well enough, ok lacing. Aromas present tannic berry, touches of merlot and wet oak. Vanillin, gentle funk and dryness creep in. Tannic red wine, berryskin and a bit of jammy seedy pulp, this ones stays a bit more dry overall. Touches of jabbing lactic life, mellow brett and firm oak lead the way. Initial is much more berry driven, touches of blackberry and raspberry meet a splash of cranberry, red wine and firmer punchy lactic sourness. A bit fuzzy and acidic, some good residual seedy and pulpy macerated berries, beating around a bramble bush with touches of red wine. Some decent punchy sourness, dryness and jabs of red wine and vanillin as we round the corner. Some decent brett, cobwebs at times. A bit of berryskin, dry and tart trailing out. Lingering seedy berries, blackberry and raspberry, kiss of cranberry. Overall, the nose seems more dry but the beer itself offers a richer seedy, fleshy berry front end. Touches of oak, cobwebs and tannic barrel. A touch of blueberry, firmer raspberry and blackberry. The olallieberry certaint gives some life and richer flavor here. The acidic ends up more reeled in and integrated well here. Good berry presence, nice tannic touch with good jabs of sourness, fleshy berry and touches of funk and cobwebs at times. Overall, the nose shows more dryness, tannic skin and barrel. The beer itself delivers more though, quite drinkable with a gorgeous pour, fuzziness and carbonation trickles on the palate with a nice firmer berry presence. The backend a bit funky with firmer oak. A good flow here. I dig this. One of the less agressive sours from this series so far, a good potent berry element with well integrated oak, tannic berryskin, and gentle wafts of funk, spritzy carnonation pricking the palate. Dig it, lovely stuff that in it’s basic form is pretty simple but also really good.

On tap at FW Barrelworks. Beautiful clear purple pour with a massive pink head and lacing. Big berry nose on this, juicy. Quite nice tasting as well. Sour, but certainly on the low-medium part of the scale. Juicy again in the taste. Ollalieberries (which, if I remember right are basically blackberries on crack) really come through. Yummy.

Bottle to glass. Pours a beautiful brownish rose color with a thin off white pinkish head. Aroma is dry, tart, slight berry character. Flavor has a huge sourness to it, sour berries, touch of sweetness. Light to medium body with an oily mouthfeel and a long lingering sour and sweet berries. No clue what an ollalieberry is, but this is delicious!

375ml bottle in a tulip. Pours deep purple with a pinkish head. Aroma of sourness, berries - mainly blackberries, but possibly others?, light malts, and some hints of oak. Flavor very strong of the berries and sourness, with a great blend of everything. Average texture. A very good beer.
