COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A Belgian Quad by recipe, but aging it in spirits barrels garners its own category: Central Coast Quad. A beer formulated to sit on the sweeter and malty side so that we could utilize it for blending. Turbinado brown sugar from Mexico and Belgian candi sugar add wonderful molasses flavors. It has a full body and lush texture with barrel expression all over this beer: toasted oak, coconut, leather and cigar tobacco.

On tap at Firestone Walker Barrelworks. It pours a dark brown body and a small, beige head. A bit alcoholic on the nose, with dried fruits and some bourbon. Chocolate notes too. The flavor is sweet and with a solid dose of dried fruits and chocolate. Decent bitterness too, and alcohol. Full body, soft carbonation. Lasting finish. Overall, too warming, but sure lovely. 130809

Bottle shared in London - thanks to Bruce! Pours clear caramel-brown with a creamy tan head. The nose has lots of ripe fruits, some brown sugar, bread, toffee. Hugely sweet flavor with lots of creamy caramel, vanilla iced cream, rich brown bread, dates. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Finishes warm and sticky with lots of gooey ripe fruits, dates and figs, more creamy caramel and toffee. Great stuff overall.

A: The pour is a dark amber color, perhaps leaning towards brown, with a tan head. S: The usual sweet, sugar notes of a barleywine are here. I get brown sugar, caramel, and toffee, but there’s a weird nuttiness to this beer that seems out of place. T: This tastes like almost like a really creamy nut brittle with extra nuts. There’s a fair amount of alcohol presence as well, a touch of oak, and some good vanilla notes. M: The body is medium with a nice creaminess and a low to moderate level of carbonation. D: This was a weird beer. In fact, several of the blending components for FW14 aren’t all that great, but somehow they make a delicious final product.

Bomber from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. 2014 vintage. Pours dark cola color with a few bubbles. Aroma is sort of stewed dark fruits with dark malts. Full bodied, at least. Flavor is like plums and dates and dark fruits with a little alcohol and smooth, smooth, treacly dark malt. This is not an ASE, IMHO. FW says Quad, undt auch Ich! Damn delicious quad. Finishes with a bit of heat to cut down the malt. Did I say delicious? Understatement.

Bottle split at Bruce’s pad, with thanks to the host with the most, 28/11/14. Mahogany brown with a decent khaki covering that soon dissipates to edgework. Nose is dark fruit rinds, coconut shavings, sticky toffee pudding, light booze fumeage, coco powder, light spice. Taste comprises toasted brown sugar, dates, sweet licks, toffee fudge, raisens, dark fruit peel, light hop presence, prunce juice. Full bodied, viscous, smooth on the palate, sweet close. Decent strong if a little overly sweet, could do with a bit more bitterness to raise the balance for me.

Tap at Max’s. Pours clear black with ruby highlights and a small, fizzy beige head, short retention with spare lacing. Aroma is caramel and brown sugar, dates, figs and prunes with cookie malt and spicy alcohol. Flavor is sweet, nearly cloying, malt with dark candied fruits, brown sugar, molasses, light hops and bitterness and a sweet finish. Full body and light carbonation.

Tap at APEX. Deep brown pour, light brown head. And HOLY HELL this is badass. So rich and decadent. Sweet but not cloying. Toffee, brown sugar, vanilla, rich barrel notes, oak, tobacco. Fucking awesome

Bottle... Pours mostly clear and dark with flashes of mahogany and a small, fleeting, white head. The nose is a swirl of caramel, oak, booze and toffee. Full-bodied with a syrupy mouthfeel and stinging carbonation. The flavor is malty and bourbony with loads of alcohol heat. Not painfully alcoholic and even if it was, I’m no pussy - bring on the booze. Pleasant, malty, warming, mouth-watering finish. A treat. Bottle courtesy of ctipping!

Bottle with friends, thanks to arminjewell for sharing. Pours a deep orangish brown appearance with a thin tan head. Thick brown sugar, caramel, toffee, rich bourbon, coconut aroma. Flavor is fairly sweet but not over the top. German chocolate cake flavor. Caramel, coconut, and a bit of chocolate. Really reminds me of the most recent anniversary beer.
