Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. This ale pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.

Note: Sucaba is the beer formerly known as Abacus until the Winter 2012 release.

UPDATED: APR 11, 2013 On tap in a wine glass. 2013 edition. Aroma is of bourbon, oak, and some chocolate. Color is a very dark brown with an off white head. Minimal lacing. Front taste is chocolate and bourbon and fades into vanilla taste. Light carbonation with a thin finish and alcohol burn. Very good beer.

Very nice barley wine. Hides the ABV quite well, which is no small feat for 12.5%. A little syrupy mouthfeel, with a bit of bourbon overtones, and some fruit notes. I like it.

2013 Vintage - pours a dark amber with a slight tan head. Nose is dark fruits, wood, bourbon, vanilla. Mouthfeel is really nice, heavy, but not overbearing. Lovely complexity here without being a total mess. Fantastic beer.

Type: Draft Glass: 0.25l tulip From: Blind Lady Ale House in Normal Heights (San Diego, Calif.) Price: $6.50 Purchased: March 31, 2013 Consumed: March 31, 2013 Misc.: N/A Poured a black amber color with three fingers of khaki cream head. Nice amount of thick, sporadic, foamy lacing on the sides. Good retention all the way down. Smelled sweet, red wine, bourbon, sour cherries, caramel, light vanilla and light smoky tobacco. Tasted so smooth out of the gate as the alcohol is well hidden. Got sour cherries, vanilla and not as much bourbon as the nose. Some oak and toffee. Tasted a bit like warm Cherry Coke. Light smokiness. Medium body. Creamy texture. Soft (below average) carbonation. Warming, smooth finish. Wow! I finally got to try this and it didnít disappoint. Smooth and flavorful all the way down. Would love to get my hands on this again.

It pours opaque mahogany with plum highlights on the edges; the head is off-white and foamy. The aroma has notes of: prunes, dates, brown sugar, molasses, caramel, and tobacco. The taste is medium sweet that finishes medium bitter; there are notes of: prunes, dates, tobacco, burnt sugar, and alcohol. The palate is full-bodied, thick, sticky, has light carbonation, and a long bitter finish. Overall, itís a fierce and rough barley wine - but so flavourful.

Pours a cloudy, dark red brown with a root beer head, which attenuates quickly. Oak bourbon, toffee, and coconut aroma. Silky, creamy mouthfeel and just a flood of magnificent flavor. Alternating chocolate, toffee, and coconut with overarching bourbon. Finishes with a little alcohol warmth, but itís not unappealing. This is a pricy beer, but it is worth it to try

Pours a deep, mostly clear ruby red, that thins out to an almond brown, with a finger or two of lasting, khaki head. Lacing is soapy, and quite lasting. Nose is of rich caramel, lightly toasted coconut, and a faint note of sweet pipe tobacco. Taste starts with buttery toffee, and caramel, before opening up into butterscotch, Brazil-nut, and syrupy malts. Touch of bitter chocolate, and oak tannins, with lingering vanilla sweetness on the finish. The body is comparatively full to most barley-wines, as is the carbonation. Putting a bottle in my cellar for an updated review later this year!

UPDATED: JUN 8, 2013 On tap at the Hungry Monk. A clear dark burgundy color with hardly any head. Huge boozy, bourbon aroma with dark cherries and oak. Beautiful smooth bourbon and heavy malt combine for a divine flavor. The oak is present in the background along sweet dark fruit and a hint of spicy clove and tobacco. Velvet smooth texture, and slight astringent tang but with sweet, short finish. Still one of my favorite barleywines.

Pours a very nice ruby color with a medium tan head. Aroma has candied fruits and vanilla...nice oak...not sweet. Flavor has wonderful candied fruit, great oak and vanilla...earthy bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium and the finish is oaky/fruity/earthy and bitter...warms beautifully.
