COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. This ale pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.

Note: Sucaba is the beer formerly known as Abacus until the Winter 2012 release.

Brother Jeff supplied in Peteluma. He didn’t like, too sweet. Is a bit cloying, and pretty warm with alcohol. Molasses and cherry, dark, very malty, and yes, sweet, hint of bubblegum. Close my eyes and this could be a port. Thick, light sourness lingers on palate, very nice.

In short: The archetypical American Barley Wine
How: Bottle, consumed 8 months after purchase, split 4-way
The look: Cloudy bronze body topped by a beige ring of foam
In long: Nose has a moderate barrels presence and leafy hops over rich caramel. Taste starts with a wicked big rich caramelized malt backbone, just enough fruity flavors to increased complexity, vanilla, wood, toasted nuts and toasted cookies, enough resinous leafy hops to almost balance this monster beer. Alcohol is a little apparent but seems rather fitting to warm up this monster body. Huge body that doesn’t feel cloying or too heavy. This is a superior example of the style. The problem with this excellent beer is the hefty price tag, too pricey to make it a regular, and I wish I could make more money at work but so far I have failed to find a way to sleep my way to the top.

Bottle shared at Dark Lord Day 2012 (Munster, IN). Pours a rich darker browninsh hue, deep with good lacing. Dies down to a film, small lacing. Aromas are rich spirit, bourbon and sweet caramel and toffee malts, touches of toast, vanilla, shaved coconut, oak. Gentle spirit, some sweet oxidation. Initial is sweeter and thicker, rich toffee and caramel, rich oak and spirit, gentle kisses of toast. Some warming elements. Initial is sweeter, toffee and caramel up front break way into toast, barrel elements, vanilla, and coconut, warming spirits grow. Spirit as it thins the body, warms the belly. Bourbon and whiskey, vanilla, oak, and toffee. Some sticky elements stick into the backend. Well balanced if a growing warmth into the back that might get a touch harsh. Still, it gives character and wins me over. Solid beer, light carbonation, good flavors and body.

Poured from a bomber into a duvel tulip. Pours a dark ruby brown with a finger length beige head that shrinks to nothing. Average lacing. Aroma is dark fruit. Raisins, figs, plums, and malt. Taste is more of the same. Raisin, plum, toffee, caramel, and slight citrus notes. Mouthfeel is sticky and chewy. Amazing beer, can’t wait till i try a cellared one.

Pours a deep burgandy brown with a thin ring of off white head. Nose and taste are sweet of caramel, vanilla, a bit of woodiness. The booze is very well hidden in this brew and it is almost painfully good!

Bottle, 04/16/2012. Pours ruby-tinged brown, short-lived beige head, thin lacing. Prominent wood and bourbon in the nose, caramel vanilla with coconut, wrapped around dark bread malts, touch of chocolate and dark fruits, subtle tartness. Taste is also barrel dominated, big coconut and molasses, dark grains and dried fruit, spicy character, bourbon vanilla booze to finish. Full palate, silky and bordering on creamy, long aftertaste, alcohol doesn’t detract. Pretty great barley wine here.
