4.3 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a deep dark brown with faint ruby highlights when held to light and a smallish off white head that quickly dissipates. The smell is really amazing. A little smoky, a bit of brown sugar, some vanilla and oak, cherries and raisins, coconut, no harsh ethanol, wow I could stick my nose under this all night. The flavor follows the aroma quite well but comes in waves of flavor. Sweet sugary malts up front, a bit of oaky bourbon next, some dark fruits wash in then some earth and sweetness then a bit of warming comes in before a semi sweet lingering finish. Medium to thick body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a sweet almost ashy or chalky mouthfeel. This one is a sipper that’s for sure, but I’m going to spend the rest of the night enjoying the shit out of this.

Tap, 2010 release. Pours opaque chocolate brown with a small tan head that dissipates quickly with no lacing. Aroma is chocolate, woody port, and raisin. Flavor is very complex sweet chocolate, raisin, cherry. Alcohol is well masked, coming on only in the warming far finish. Reminds me a bit of Parabola. Thick and rich in the mouth, almost a bit gritty. Quite nice.

A - Pours a dark ruby-brown with a finger of frothy khaki-chocolate head. The head fades down fairly quickly leaving behind some light lacing.
S - Aroma is a mix of caramel malts and sweet caramelized sugars, with some plum and other dark fruit, vanilla, oak, toasted coconut, and a bit of booze.
T - Starts off with some sweet caramel malts and caramelized sugars with some raisin, plum, and other dark fruits, and some vanilla and toasted coconut. Through the middle, the oak and Bourbon comes through with some light chocolate and roast. The finish is a mix of sweet caramelized sugars, vanilla, oak, Bourbon, dark fruit, English yeast, and a bit of booze.
M - Medium-full bodied with light carbonation. Feels smooth and a touch syrupy with a sweet and warming finish.
D - Very drinkable. Great barleywine with really nice Bourbon coming through. Amazing overall balance.

4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
I split a bottle of this with a couple friends on Saturday. We’ve all been anxious to try this beer for a few years now.
The color is a beautiful dark ruby, as stated on the label. The head is rather small and fades rapidly to virtually nothing, leaving some faint lacing on the glass.
The aroma is inviting, with scents of bourbon, malt, caramels, and oak.
Delicious! Balanced? Oh yeah. Flavors flow together beautifully. Brown sugar, caramels soaked in bourbon, oak barrels, hints of vanilla.
The feel is truly exceptional. The beer goes down effortlessly, with nary a hint of the supposed 13% abv. It would be no problem to finish a bomber unaided. No need to age this masterpiece, as it’s already silky smooth.
Overall, a terrific beer and a stellar example of a barrel-aged barleywine. Highly recommended.

Bottle. Had this a couple times now and love more each try. Pours an dark amber with a thinner tan head touches of lace. The smell is big sweet caramel, toffee, vanilla, oak, bourbon, dark fruits, some tobacco. The flavor is pretty much the same but there is a creamy richness full of the vanilla and toffee and bouron that makes this so delicate and decadent. Started slightly chilled and worked to room temp and the flavors evolve and get better with this one. Damn love this brew. For 13% it is also scary because the booze is hidden perfectly with the warming sensation in the gut.

Bottle, box, girl and the gold watch. Reddish oak colour with almost no head. afroma of caramel, hops and alcohol. flavour is herbal, caramel hops and alcohol. somewhat medicinal herbal and overpowering. Am I alone in running away from the abv? Am I alone in looking fror subtelty? Am i contradicting myself, a hypocite or on the cusp? Do I just want to drown in a pool of SNPA??????

UPDATED: SEP 14, 2012 Cola brown, thin tan head. Aroma is bourbon, light caramel. Body is medium, not overbearing. Flavor is vanilla/bourbon with light caramel, clean pine/earth hops. General impression is positive, a good sipping beer. Less thick and cloying than expected. Nice.
