COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. This ale pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.

Note: Sucaba is the beer formerly known as Abacus until the Winter 2012 release.

Bottle: Poured a medium clear amber color ale with a small foamy head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of bourbon and corn is very deep with some sweet caramelized malt notes. Taste is a very rich mix between some bourbon notes with light corn ester and some deep caramelize sugar. Bourbon is intense though not too much too ruin the balanced though vanilla notes are harder to distinguish. Residual sugar is also not too overwhelming and some attenuation remains to keep some kind of balance into this big beer. Well done and something I would have again.

Bottle at home, from my Minneapolis Town Hall glass. Pours nearly opaque russet, with a tawny flash. Nose is not bourbon, loads of toffee, caramel, smoke, and barrel. Very sticky but very excellent nose. Flavours of big bourbon cask, a bit hot, but with surprising balance and weight. Big, bourbony, but surprisingly pleasant to drink!

Bottle shared by BVery. Pours a oily brown black that looks copper and leaves a tight khaki wispy film. Aroma is awesome vanilla woodiness and sweet candied sugar malt and hidden whiskey scents. Taste is more sweet malty vanila wood and shows a awesome caramel maltiness and subtle spice bitterness. Palate is full and slick with a drying finish. Fucking awesome!

2012 vintage. Dark brown pour with ruby tinges and a gentle, mostly fading beige foam. Deep, sugary, very fruity and rich nose where an intense fig perfume comes across as jammy to the max and holding nutty, earthy, highly toasty nuances. In mouth, the first thing to hit me is that despite the focused fruit in the aroma, there is very little acidity at play here. Synchronously, there is very little bitterness involved. It makes for a beer that is certainly rich, but tiresome in its intense vanilla-laden sugaryness that does not convey quite the humongous depth these very sweet beers need to be successful on my palate. Were it veering more towards a sourish vinous character, I’d dig as it’s full palate and self-assuming soft carbonation are spotless. At the same time, while it’s a 12.5% offering, I should not expect a subtle alcohol presence I guess, but here, it is fairly invasive, accentuating the caramelly angles with a blast of heat, one that becomes more and more apparent as the beer warms up. Plenty of dried fruit sugars in the finish, one that lasts and keeps warming up. Well... it sure got some merits and that brewer generally has one of the most trustworthy names in the business, but an average above 4 when there are so little of those strikes me as surprising.
