Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. This ale pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.

Note: Sucaba is the beer formerly known as Abacus until the Winter 2012 release.

Boxed and black foil-wrapped bomber from 2012, opened in celebration of being granted permission to write my dissertation. Pours garnet red and brown with a short-lived brownish-beige head. Aromas of sweet bourbon, oak, butter, and orange/vanilla. Dark fruit and some alcohol creep in as it warms. The flavor is sweet, sugared fruit, soaked in bourbon. Smoky oak, tons of buttery toast, and light berry are present, with moderate bitterness, cherry/bourbon, and burnt sugar in the finish. Low/medium carbonation, medium/full body, warming, and creamy. Really well done, delicious! [1021]

Fine, I wonít tick, Iíll rate this one. Dark brown mahoganey. The aroma was brandy, bourbon, cocoa, vanilla. The flavor was coconut, oak, vanilla, cocoa, faint slices, light fruits. Only flaw was a little heat. FW can do IT! Mouthfeel a tad light and lacking some carbonation spritz.

22oz bottle, 2012 vintage, purchased at Belmont Station. Pours a deep, dark, amber color with an off white head that fades quickly. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, oak. A little syrupy on the palate with light, soft carbonation. Flavor is sweet, malty, vanilla, oak, chocolate, a little booze, with a sweet, bourbon finish. Very tasty.

Dark brown pour with thinnish head. Aroma of bourbon and cocoa, with a flavor similar. Cocoa and vanilla accent a big bourbon base. Hints of oak and and vanilla. Silky smooth. Well done.

22 oz. bottle pours a deep mahogany color with a small eggshell head. Huge whiskey aroma with dark fruits in the background. Taste is very potent with a huge sweet body. The oak notes from the aging process is phenomenal. Mouthfeel is pretty thick so definitely sip on it but an absolute prime example of not only a great barley wine but an amazing oak aged experiment. Find this.

Sampled at an esbls tastong. At 4 Hands. Dark brown aque. Dark rich malt nose with bourbon. This is good. So much flavor. That bourbon is king here but dark fruit and so much malt. Good.

Poured into tulip glass A: Sucaba pours with a wonderful frothy light brown (think milk chocolate) head that is average in size (about 1 finger). Itís head diminishes without staying around long at all. There is some lacing but does not stick to the glass very long. The color is murky brown to ruby red on the edges and bottom upon holding it up to the light. S: Maple sweetness, vanilla, toasted oak, tobacco, and lots of bourbon. Wow lots going on here in the aroma. Next I get the dark fruits like raisin, plum and maybe some dark cherry. The sweetness is evident and wonderful. Brown sugar and toffee come to mind next. Lastly I do pick up some tobacco. T: The taste does not disappoint and follows the nose like I was hoping! I first taste a wonderful combination of bourbon and sweetness that intermingle in perfect harmony together. The dark fruits (plum, raisin, prune and date) take center stage and then the vanilla and oak make their appearence. I must mention the alcohol is very much there and warms and stings the mouth and tongue urging me to take another sip! M: This is medium on the palate but just right in my opinion. It is alcoholic like I mentioned in the taste but just awesome. Sticky comes to mind as I continue to sip as it does coat my mouth nicely. This allows the flavor to linger for a looong time and Iím lovin every minute of it. O: King Henry is one of my favorite beers and let me tell you Iíll take Sucaba as a decent substitute for the never brewed again King. This has shot to the top of my list of all time favorite sipping beers, but it is so hard to just sip this one.

22 oz bomber purchased at Royal Liquor in Kansas City, Missouri. (2012) Vintage. The pour is a deep brown, with light ruby highlights and a thick khaki head. The aroma is vanilla, sweet toffee, caramel, malty, oak wood and warmly boozy. The alcohol of the nose melds nicely with the giant malt aroma. The taste is the big malt sweetness (vanilla, caramel, dark fruits) along with a really nice full leafy earthiness and mineral. As with the nose, the alcohol complements the big flavors rather than detracts. The palate is medium to heavy bodied, creamy, and has a pleasant lingering maltiness. Generally I donít love these gigantic Barley Wines, but this one managed to be big and classy. Nice beer.
