Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. This ale pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.

Note: Sucaba is the beer formerly known as Abacus until the Winter 2012 release.

650ml bottle - thanks tiong, VastActive and the crowd from Hel!
Beautiful rich aroam, heady malts, some coconut. Normally that coconut would be a very bad sign, but this manages to get away with it somehow, and the richness of the roasted malts and woodiness are make up for almost everything. Very sweet sticky palate. Nice malty but a bit yeasty. Coconut less obvous in the taste. Smoothish, and a nice sipper. Did like coming back to this glass in between subsequent beers, as the aroma was a reset that would put a smile on my face. If I was being harsh, I’d flaw it for being a bit too sweet and strong, but I’m overlooking that.

(Bottle, 0.65 l - 2014 vintage - BB 10.04.2019, courtesy of tiong, 20141122) The beer poured ruby port coloured and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, raisins and hops. Palate was full bodied and warming with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, sweetness, grass, coconut(!), raisins and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet, malty, hoppy and bitter. A bit harsh but still tasty barley wine except the horrid coconut.

Pours a dark brown with off-white head. Caramel, toffee, vanilla, and some dark fruits on the nose; follows onto the palate. This has a lot going on. Pretty solid.

2013 bottle in a teku. Pours very deep brown with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of toffee and caramel and nutty malts, oak and bourbon and vanilla, some light bitterness, and more oak and malts. Flavor the same with a great blend of the barrel and the barley wine. Smooth texture. A really good beer, but not the best barley wine ever.

22oz bottle - This is just insane how great this beer is on nearly every level. The intense amount of flavor depth combined with the olfactory input is really something to appreciate and admire. Waves of rich, butter-toffee, vanilla, wood, chocolate, thick caramel syrup, and coconut cake batter fill the nose with just a light twinge of alcohol showing up. Stunning. The complexity on this is just mind blowing. It reminded me in a lot of ways of Apis Póltorak Jadwiga, with it’s multiple layers of flavors, each meshing with each other in an orchestra of wonderful flavors. Bounding flavors of bourbon, oak, vanillin, brown sugar, caramel, chocolate, butter-scotch, leather, and Captain Black pipe tobacco. There are very few beers as defining to a category as this is to the barleywine style. It’s simply, simply amazing.

Well done. Aroma of oak, molasses and bourbon. Dark brown color with a thin head. Smooth brandy-like palate with light carbonation. A blend of strong flavors from caramel to vanilla to burn sugar with sweet finish and bourbon burn.
