Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. This ale pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.

Note: Sucaba is the beer formerly known as Abacus until the Winter 2012 release.

On tap at Boulder Strong Ale Fest poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small lingering tan head. Aromas of oak, plum, vanilla, toffee, light bourbon and light spice. Draught at Boulder Strong Ale Festival. Pours dark brown with a small, fizzy, off-white head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (nutty, caramel, bread), average hops (flowers, grass), average yeast (dough) with notes of dates, vanilla, wood, and alcohol. Full bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and an astringent finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness.

Bottle at Josh’s Farewell Fling, big thanks to Bruce for whipping this one out, 20/02/14. Lightly hazed dark amber/chestnut brown with a well appointed light beige head that thins to a covering. Nose is dark toffee fudge, coconut shavings, dark fruit tang, cake mix, cramelised sugars, praline notes, subtle alcohol notes. Taste comprises mellow dark fruits, coconut, rich dark toffee notes, light booze, raisens, dates, brown sugar. Medium + body, fine carbonation, lightly warming alcohol in the finish. Solid barley wine, ticks all the boxes, alcohol well integrated.

650ml bottle - thanks tiong, VastActive and the crowd from Hel!
Beautiful rich aroam, heady malts, some coconut. Normally that coconut would be a very bad sign, but this manages to get away with it somehow, and the richness of the roasted malts and woodiness are make up for almost everything. Very sweet sticky palate. Nice malty but a bit yeasty. Coconut less obvous in the taste. Smoothish, and a nice sipper. Did like coming back to this glass in between subsequent beers, as the aroma was a reset that would put a smile on my face. If I was being harsh, I’d flaw it for being a bit too sweet and strong, but I’m overlooking that.

Bottle… Hazy, dark, mahogany ale with a small, creamy, light brown head. The aroma is a rich, decadent mélange of white oak, bourbon, caramel, vanilla and coconut. Full-bodied with a milky mouthfeel and modest carbonation. The flavor mirrors the aroma in that it is a delicious marriage of caramel, toffee, vanilla, coconut and oak. Malty, rich, warming finish. Kudos to dosbeerigos for sharing his bottle of this elixir!

UPDATED: MAY 26, 2012 2011 vintage. Bottle @ home, courtesy of foppa78 into my new Cigar City snifter, courtesy of markwise. Thanks guys! Very deep brown/ruby appearance with a tiny tan head that dissipates in no time. Really a nice, smooth, tobacco, fig, plum, caramel-toffee malty, somewhat sweet aroma that’s exquisite. Tobacco, date, plum, fig, dark fruity, moderate toffee, lighter caramel, fairly malty, bourbon, somewhat woody flavor. Dark fruity, cherry, plum, toffee aftertaste. No hint of the 13% booze- are you kidding me??? In a way, it kind of reminds me of HOTD Matt in its complexity. Simply unbelievable.

2012 vintage. Bottle @ home. Last time around I was blown away by this baby, so I’m really looking forward to trying it again. Dark reddish brown appearance with a brown head without much lasting power. There’s initially some notes of booze in the nose which isn’t all that unpleasant. Besides that, rich toffee, thick caramel malts, vanilla, oak, mild to moderate bourbon, and dark fruits (fig, plum) are also noticeable in the aroma. Creamy, nutty, rich caramel/chocolate malty flavor initially that is like tasting a liquid turtle chocolate candy. More vanilla, oak, and bourbon towards the back of the mouth and despite the overall sweetness of the beer, it’s balanced incredibly well. There’s also notes of tobacco, fig, and vanilla with a warming, dessert-like finish. Simply unbelievable. Easily one of the five best beers I’ve ever had.

Holy hell this was the best beer at the AZ strong beer fest. Dark brown pour, small tan head. Aroma is just loaded with sweet bourbon, vanilla, caramel, golden raisins and wood. Flavor is sweet but not cloying. Vanilla and bourbon stand out and combine with raisins, toffee, wood, dark dried fruit...my goodness this stuff is amazing.
