4.9 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 20/20
Aroma: massive oak, vanilla, bourbon .notes. also getting a dark fruit note. Appearance: reddish-brown, 1/2 finger off-white head. No lacing and a massive amount of alcohol legs. Taste: Wow!!! Sweet but not too sweet. Not a lot of bitterness. This is the smoothest beer I ever had. Overall: The best barleywine I ever had. The best beer Iíve had period. The only reason this is not a 5.0 score is wish it was in a 12 ounce bottle. This will creep up on you, definitely a sipper.

4.9 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
UPDATED: FEB 23, 2013 2013 fresh
A: Deep, dark, dank murky ruby/mahogany with a beige barrel-aged head - big bubbles, spotty lacing, great retention
S: Incredible. Huge vanilla, coconut, caramel. Lots of wood, tobacco and leather earthy notes. So incredibly rich.
T: Huge, hits you in waves. Big caramel, dark fruit; oak, bourbon; vanilla coconut. As it warms the caramel increases and chocolate presents itself
P: Incredibly smooth, slightly chewy. Does not at all feel like a 12.5 beer - medium to full in body. Complements everything else
O: Really incredible

4.9 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Pours a cloudy, dark red brown with a root beer head, which attenuates quickly. Oak bourbon, toffee, and coconut aroma. Silky, creamy mouthfeel and just a flood of magnificent flavor. Alternating chocolate, toffee, and coconut with overarching bourbon. Finishes with a little alcohol warmth, but itís not unappealing. This is a pricy beer, but it is worth it to try

UPDATED: SEP 29, 2012 2012 vintage bomber. pours a deep red / brown with a nice 1+ finger off white head. sweet nose with bourbon, oak, vanilla, and dark fruits. med body with a very smooth balance between the barrel notes and the malts. sweet caramel malts, dark fruits play off the lingering bourbon and oak notes from the wood. sweet dark fruit finish with some heat and a touch of citrus. this is one of the best beers around. worth every penny.
sample from the pitcher at GABF on 9/26/09... pours a dark brown... lots of wood on the nose... big smooth body with dark fruit notes blended with a perfect level of oak. really nice Barley Wine...

4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: MAY 26, 2012 2011 vintage. Bottle @ home, courtesy of foppa78 into my new Cigar City snifter, courtesy of markwise. Thanks guys! Very deep brown/ruby appearance with a tiny tan head that dissipates in no time. Really a nice, smooth, tobacco, fig, plum, caramel-toffee malty, somewhat sweet aroma thatís exquisite. Tobacco, date, plum, fig, dark fruity, moderate toffee, lighter caramel, fairly malty, bourbon, somewhat woody flavor. Dark fruity, cherry, plum, toffee aftertaste. No hint of the 13% booze- are you kidding me??? In a way, it kind of reminds me of HOTD Matt in its complexity. Simply unbelievable.
2012 vintage. Bottle @ home. Last time around I was blown away by this baby, so Iím really looking forward to trying it again. Dark reddish brown appearance with a brown head without much lasting power. Thereís initially some notes of booze in the nose which isnít all that unpleasant. Besides that, rich toffee, thick caramel malts, vanilla, oak, mild to moderate bourbon, and dark fruits (fig, plum) are also noticeable in the aroma. Creamy, nutty, rich caramel/chocolate malty flavor initially that is like tasting a liquid turtle chocolate candy. More vanilla, oak, and bourbon towards the back of the mouth and despite the overall sweetness of the beer, itís balanced incredibly well. Thereís also notes of tobacco, fig, and vanilla with a warming, dessert-like finish. Simply unbelievable. Easily one of the five best beers Iíve ever had.

4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: MAY 9, 2013 From 2011 bottle (Abacus). The aroma is absolutely fantastic. Strong malt with a bourbon barrel scent. The appearance is dark ruby with an off-white head. Taste is spectacular. Lots of oak aged complexity with hints of the various malts involved as well as the bourbon components. It may be a high rating but keep in mind this bottle had 2 years of age on it at the time of tasting.

4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Beautiful dark ruby red pour with a soda-like fizzy brownish head that dissipates very quickly. The aroma is so complex that I just want to keep sniffing it over and over. Bourbon, vanilla, plums, coffee, cherries, caramel, and plenty of alcohol. The flavor is just as it smells, very sweet and extremely smooth. You definitely notice the alcohol present though. I get a lot more of the bourbon lingering on the palate with a hint of vanilla. This is a very bold yet subtle beer. There are a lot of very strong flavors present, but none seems to override the others. I would recommend picking this up as often as you can find it. This is a special beer
