Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. This ale pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.

Note: Sucaba is the beer formerly known as Abacus until the Winter 2012 release.

Vintage 2013 Served in a snifter A - Pours a dark brown/mahogany color with red highlights. 1 finger of off-white head forms a thin collection of wispy patterned bubbles below a solid collar. S - Sweet whiskey, vanilla, buttery cotton candy, toasted coconut, caramel and toffee, sugar coated nuts roasted, amaretto, scorched oak wood and cherries, strawberry and rhubarb preserve. T - A swirl of roasted wood, sweet vanilla, dense toffee, sticky caramel, toasted fruit bread, leather, spicy hops, whiskey swirls around notes of chocolate cherry cordial, amaretto, and rum. The whiskey components grow stronger as it warms, making the finish drier and drier. Some spiciness shows up toward the warming finish. M - Starts out firm and full but turns medium and softens out, low and fine carbonation. One of the best aromas Iíve ever smelled from a beer. Complexity is an over-used word but this is complex. The transitions of aroma, taste, and feel over the course of the bottle are incredible. Full barrel flavors the meld beautifully. Donít know how this could get any better with age. Pours strong. Light head that fades fast. Smells like butterscotch and toasted molasses. Tastes show more oak than expected. Residual sweetness and heavy malt profile take away all bitterness. Tasted somewhat like banana bread. Surprised me to not be at all hoppy as a Barleywine.

UPDATED: MAR 15, 2014 From notes, consumed on 4/9/13. Bottle (2013) poured into a Belgian snifter. Pours dark brown with half a finger of off-white head receding into a ring around the glass. Aromas of dark fruit, coconut, booze, bourbon, vanilla. Tasting notes of dark fruit, oak, vanilla, coconut, bourbon. Warm boozy finish. Medium body with a semi-dry finish.

Had a bottle of 2014 on 3/15/14 and it was pretty much as I remember in my 2013 notes. ABV was upped from 12.5% for 2013 to 13.5% for 2014.

Bottle (2013) poured into a Belgian snifter, consumed on 3/16/14 so around 14 months old I believe. Pours dark brown with just over a finger of off-white head receding into a ring around the glass. More dark fruit on the aroma, faded notes of bourbon, coconut, and vanilla. Tasting notes of dark fruit, dark chocolate, light bourbon, light coconut, light vanilla. Still very enjoyable with a year on it but I prefer this one fresh with the bolder barrel character.

This is one fabulous Barleywine. Drinking a 2012 bottle poured into a Firestone Walker snifter. Aroma is bourbon and vanilla yumminess. Appearance is a semi transparent reddish brown letting just a bit of light pass through it. Head was 1/2 finger and a light tan in color. Taste is bourbon, vanilla, cherries, prunes, and liquorice. Palate is very pleasant with the just right amount of carbonation. Overall a great BW and at the top of my top 5. A sipper for sure. The alcohol will catch up to you over time. Pairs great with peanuts and yes peanut butter. :)

UPDATED: MAR 3, 2012 Sampled at Toronado 2009 Barleywine Festival. This is the second beer Iíve had at this event that has simply floored me with its silky rich yummy goodness. Pours deep amber to near dark brown and micro thin tan head. Wow! Another knee buckler aroma with a smooth blended mixture of wood, molasses, rich dark fruity esters and more rich molasses. The wood notes become mildly brighter upon further inspection. The taste is just amazing with some smooth bourbon flowing into deep rich dark fruity esters accented with well rounded smooth wood notes. Just a smooth beer that gets almost velvety for a while. It dries out a tad into the finish.
Seems to be way barrel forward in 2012 as compared to the draft version I had back in 2009. Iím not liking it nearly as much.

2008 on tap at Brouwerís Hard Liver í09. Surprise addition to the tap list. This stuff was great. Pours dark dark brown with a decent off-white head. Intense nose of bourbon, oatmeal, and buttery toffee. Floral hops come through in the taste with a little bit of tobacco as well. Full mouthfeel, nice bourbon/oatmeal component on the finish.

On tap at JJ Brewskyís in Camarillo. Deep, dark, amber color with a creamy head. The aromas are never ending on this one, with strong burnt caramel, raisin, and definite bourbon whiskey overtones. On the palate there is a beautiful balance of raisin, toffee, toasted vanilla, rum cake, and an underlying hoppiness that is persitent, but never overpowers. Excellent barleywine and a great addition to an increasinly inspired lineup!

Draft at Monkís Cafe. Pours a deep dark copper/chestnut color with dark ruby/mahogany edges and a one finger frothy off-white head that quickly settles into a thin lasting ring. Sporadic small spots of lacing left behind. Amazing complex nose with a blend of earthy oak, luscious vanilla, sweet boozy bourbon, dark fruit and earthy/leathery malt. The barrel character is very prominent with lots of toasted oak without smelling burnt. Sweet bourbon and lots of vanilla and marshmallow mellowing things out. As it warms the malts become more prominent with hints of leather, toffee, hazelnut and caramel. Slightly vinous with hints of cherry, grape and plum. Smells amazing and the bourbon is well integrated in the nose without overpowering the other elements. Medium bodied with the perfect balance of earthy barrel character, boozy bourbon, sweet malt and alcohol heat. Very similar to the aroma with a prominent barrel presence up front. Earthy oak that is slightly toasted with sweet bourbon flavor that is prominent but not overly hot. Although the bourbon flavor is strong, itís not overpowering and the other flavors are able to stand out. There are also notes of vanilla and toasted coconut from the barrel, mellowing things out. Slightly hot with some nice burning warmth in the finish but the ABV is pretty well masked at 13%. Underneath there is a nice blend of earthy/leathery and sweet malt flavor. Slightly earthy barleywine flavor with hints of sweet caramel toffee, rye and faint cocoa. Vinous with dark fruit flavor, especially dark cherry as well as some grape, plum, raisin and fig. More heat toward the end of the swallow but this beer is excellently balanced, delicious and dangerously drinkable. One of the best barrel aged beers Iíve ever had. Amazing!

Thanks Dan! Pours the darkest shade of ruby, with a quickly fading tan head. Aroma of canned pineapple, coconut, and honey. Tastes of dark chocolate, vanilla, coconut, and fruit cocktail. Smooth and viscous with just the right amount of alcohol warmth. I think Iíve found a new favorite barley wine.
