COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
An instant classic, Union Jack is the recipient of numerous awards including back to back wins at the Great American Beer Festival. Union Jack is abound with hop aroma and character. In fact this well balanced, west coast IPA is dry hopped 3 separate times, each lot giving it more and more of the grapefruit citrus hop aroma and flavor it is known for. Overall it utilizes over 4 pounds of pacific northwest hops per barrel.

UPDATED: APR 16, 2010 The aroma is incredible...supremely hoppy and hints of malt (hay, fresh sweet bread). I didn’t know it at the time but the appearance is surprisingly clear for the flavor that follows. It is amber in color with a decent tan head that hangs around just long enough. Thick on the palate, with some immediate fruit, it leads quickly to a substantial bitterness...bitter but very refreshing. This brew mellows on the finish with a lighter bitterness and lively carbonation. This beer doesn’t have any weak points. It is a world class IPA.

Hits the nose with big bittersweet notes and a strong mix of skittles and sour patch kids. Flavor is earthy and astringent hop punch but not overly bitter at any point, like floral phemaldehyde. Good medium sticky sweet mouthfeel. Nice brew. Thanks Firestone Walker. 2010 12oz.

Pours clear honey-amber with a small head. Aroma-malty, earthy, citrus/piney/resinous hops. Taste- medium sweet malt and dusty, bitter hops. Dark hop profile, not floral or citrusy on the palate. Substantial bitterness coats the mouth and stays there forever. Finishes medium bodied, oily yet dry, and quite bitter. Excellent.

UPDATED: NOV 4, 2013 Poured from 12oz., clear golden with medium off white head. Nose of citrus and mild pine, on the bitter side. Taste is on the sweet side, malty, medium bodied, a bit sticky.Nice long finish. Would be one of the finalists for a blind tasting of West Coast IPA’s. Not as dry as some of the others.

Soapy head on light orange pour. Tart orange nose, lots of malty fruits. Body is sweet and thick, huge fruit, melon, orange, citrus. Tangy sweet, full mouth finish. A bit dry-bitter but overall more fruit flavor.

UPDATED: JUN 9, 2010 Not a big fan of IPA’s, so my review is a little jaded. Aroma is heavy on pine and grapefruit. Taste is an earthy hoppiness with a little tinge of grapefruit, pine and leaves toward the end.

UPDATED: JUN 16, 2010 My Bottom Line:
Citrusy, leafy hops even develop peachy connotations when paired with honeyed and biscuity malts for a compelling India Pale Ale experience.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the clear dark golden.
-After reading a few recent ratings, I see that this can be a West Coast hop bomb. I’ve had it twice now (tap and bottle) and this was really NOT the case.
-The hop bitterness is leafy and quite spicy.
-The flavor profile leaves more space for the malts to shine than the usual California IPA.

On tap at The Gingerman, NY and from the bottle.

12 ounce bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a clear amber color with a medium head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of floral hops, a bit of melon and nutty malts. The taste is floral hops. melon, citrus, mango, more citrus. Pale malts in the background. Intriguing hopping. Medium bodied.

On tap light copper with white head. Very nice spicy aroma. Good body and hoppy throughout. Have wanted to try this for awhile. Glad I did.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle from Fireworks. Pours an amber color with a frothy, white head. Herbal and citric hop notes jump out of the glass immediately. A touch of florals too. The taste is certainly a big west coast IPA with a good dose of hops. What little malt sweetness there is gets pushed away quickly. Lots of herbals and citric notes on the tongue. Medium mouthfeel with medium, sharp carbonation and a long bitter finish. This is a pretty solid IPA and worth giving a go!
