An instant classic, Union Jack is the recipient of numerous awards including back to back wins at the Great American Beer Festival. Union Jack is abound with hop aroma and character. In fact this well balanced, west coast IPA is dry hopped 3 separate times, each lot giving it more and more of the grapefruit citrus hop aroma and flavor it is known for. Overall it utilizes over 4 pounds of pacific northwest hops per barrel.

Tried it when in Oxnard, CA. Bought a Firestone Walker sampler pack from costco. This was my favorite from the bunch.

bottle. A very nice pour of clear red orange and a sticky, foamy white head. Aroma of cherry, orange toffee. Full bodied, chewy mouthfeel. Sharp grapefruit bitterness with some cough syrup on the finish. Well crafted, but would not drink this again.

On tap at The Monk. Pours a clear copper with a small white head, fantastic lacing. Orange and grapefruit hops make up the bulk of the nose. Flavour is a nice blend of hop resin and sweet fruits. Sweet caramel malt backing. Good ipa

Pours a golden/amber with a nice thick creamy white head. Aroma hits right off the pour with citrus, orange and grapefruit hops, then leads to a caramel sweet malt background. Taste is dank hop resin with grapefruit and candy sugar. medium bitterness. Its pretty clean, but the sweetness from the resin and malt brings this down a bit. A touch thick. I would expect this more from a double IPA.

Luminous coppery-golden. Creamy and gluey white head. Soft hop-filled aromatics mimic honeyed orange pith, tangerine zest, and grapefruit. Faintly caramelly and instant tealike (Crystal?). Firm body with soft and snug carbonation. Hops unravel with a citric smack (orange pith, peach) paired with relatively clean and subdued notes of resin, grapefruit zest bitterness and a tinge of lime-peel sharpness. Comes off as lightly floral, though the undefined malt, reminiscent of caramel and soggy bread, joins the jelly-candy sweetness and weighs the center down considerably. Two-row malt contributes some appealing dustiness which elevates the dryness and combats the sweeter caramel. Brisk mineralic grit enhances the compact hop clasp. Fairly resinous, though never overbearingly oily so as to not obstruct the cleanly extracted delicacies of the floral aspects. Closes flavorfully hoppy with scratchy citric zest echoed by ripe peach, fluffy orange pith, and smooth malt whispers. A very respectable example, atypical of the vast majority of American IPAs as the hops happen to be bright, delicate, and flavorsome. That said, it’s still a bit sweet (plum) and it’s a bit heavy on the sweet grain/caramel. Would love to see the alcohol toned down to about 6% or so and the Crystal ditched altogether and replaced with something like Munich or Vienna. All in all, an enjoyable quaff.

Thanks to decaturstevo for sharing this one. The pour is mostly clear gold with a white head. The aroma is mostly malt with some bubblegum, spice and sugar over an overall earthiness. Dry palate right from the start, bitter.

The beer pours a clear medium fold with a finger of white head that fades quickly. The aroma is medium starting off with some nice grapefruit bitter citrus notes. It is balanced with some nice hops that are not to strong and have a hint of pine. The taste starts off a little sweet but then bring a nice amount of pine, not a ton but enough to make you pucker a little. Not a huge pine fan, but this is easy to drink.

Strong aroma of orange zest, raisins, and flowers. Cloudy and orange in color with a thin white head. Okay lacing. Has a thick texture with a slight bitter taste. For some reason i taste a hint of ginger. This is a full-bodied beer with average carbonation. This is a good ipa and would buy again.
