An instant classic, Union Jack is the recipient of numerous awards including back to back wins at the Great American Beer Festival. Union Jack is abound with hop aroma and character. In fact this well balanced, west coast IPA is dry hopped 3 separate times, each lot giving it more and more of the grapefruit citrus hop aroma and flavor it is known for. Overall it utilizes over 4 pounds of pacific northwest hops per barrel.

Recently available locally. I have gone through a few six packs already, I am quite smitten with the beer. The aroma is bursting with citrus, pine and honey. It smells great. There is a lot of hops flavor, but there is also a malt backing, but not a sweet crystal malt backing like some beers, but one that comes from flavorful base malts, including munich malt. In the end, this beer is a about the hops and the hops flavor is very potent, but not overpowering. There is a fair amount of bitterness that lingers into the finish, but it doesn’t seem to be overly bitter. It is dangerously drinkable for a 7.5% beer, probably one of my favorite IPA’s already.

Overall bitterness is strong. No prevailing citrus nose but certainly an undercurrent, mostly grapefruit. Pine also apparent. This figures to be a top IPA. A bit expensive at $12.99 a sixer, given that that there are alternatives that may be as strong for a few bucks less, still, though, a very welcome addition to the IPA oeuvre.

At a tasting, thanks Dagan, pours an hazy light orange with a medium head, aroma of honey, molasses, orange and marmalade, flavor is bitter and refreshing, with some malt and tangerine, finishes bitter sweet, medium to full bodied.

Tap. Clear light orange pour with a white head. Aroma of lemon and citrus. Medium palate. Taste was killer - citrus hops, delicious. Great brew.

Perfumey hop aroma, licorice. Some spicy citrus and rounded tangerine. Flowery esters. A sweetish aroma. Shiny orange color, slushy head. Bright and inviting. Head retention is nice. The flavor is heavy, oily pine hop flavor. Comes off quite bitterly at first, but with a sweet respite. Very resinous at first, then has the finish of orange peel and tea leaves. The palate is fizzy, prickly, with a sticky finish. Chewy and slick at the end. It’s just sub-Imperial in its strength. A top-notch west coast IPA.

12 oz bottle. Pours a clear honey/amber. Aroma of grapefruit, spruce, caramel, floral. Flavor is citrus, pine, spruce, with hints of lavender, caramel and brown sugar. This is fantastic. It moves to the top of my IPA list.

Purchased at Armanetti’s in Chicago, IL; enjoyed before going on a swim with a friend in the dead of winter. Appearance a very clear light amber/gold with a rich white head that laces to the glass. Aroma of hops, a mix between citrus and pine, also a touch of spice, has a light aroma but it’s nice. Taste is really freaking good, very smooth for an IPA, not too bitter but retains the hoppy flavor. Very well done.

Another mean west coast IPA. Glowing dark amber color with decent head and lacing. Clearly aggressively hopped, although with dried hops nonetheless, the beer smells pine tree with grapefruit for cones. It even tastes a little like grapefruit. Aside from that, ’well balanced’ must mean unrelentingly bitter. The malt could as well be anything, because it doesn’t come through much. Rips the palate, although the aftertaste is relatively mellow. Very solid, but best chased with something other than itself.

Nice simple yet well done IPA on draft at McGregors. Clear, dark gold, fine lacing pattern. Nose is hefty grapefruit, palate is quite heavy with it too. Palate isn’t overwhelmed with hops, their presence is well done. This one was getting many raves at McG’s.

Bottle. Clear medium orange-yellow nice head head with long fine lacing. Aroma is at at first ripe orange mango peach then grapefruit and grassy hops. Taste is candy citrus and grapefruit bitter. Long bitter finish. Palate is silky, sticky, with a long mouthwatering finish. A spectacular beer. In my memory I rate the Double Jack at the next level but in when trying to rate they come out the same pretty much.
