An instant classic, Union Jack is the recipient of numerous awards including back to back wins at the Great American Beer Festival. Union Jack is abound with hop aroma and character. In fact this well balanced, west coast IPA is dry hopped 3 separate times, each lot giving it more and more of the grapefruit citrus hop aroma and flavor it is known for. Overall it utilizes over 4 pounds of pacific northwest hops per barrel.

12oz pour from refrigerated bottle into weizen glass. Golden, a tad hazy, moderate white head, great lacing. Nose is grapefruit, mango, tangerine, biscuit. Taste is much of the same. Great notes of grapefruit and tangerine. Medium body, fairly creamy, and a little sticky on the end.

33cl can [from trade with jtclockwork I believe(?)] @ home. Clear golden color, medium sized white to slightly off-white head. Aroma is as good as an IPA can get: malts, loads of hops, grassy, lightly fruity and plenty of grapefruit. Oh boy, this is superb! Taste malts, loads of hops, grapefruit, superbly bitter and lightly grassy. Medium body and carbonation. This is incredible. So fresh, crisp and just pure hop juice. Totally blew me away, best IPA I’ve ever had.

Can from Rehills of Jesmond, Nescastle. Pours golden with a frothy off white head. Lovely fresh pine aroma. The taste is bitter and spicy with lots of resinous pine. Some underlying caramel. Very tasty and easy to drink.

DATE TASTED: August 2, 2015 ... GLASSWARE: Barley Creek pint... OCCASION: watching Naked and Afraid XL... APPEARANCE: quintessential golden amber body with a scarcity of effervescence--surprising...not surprisingly, the head is creamy, thick, white as snow and lacing beautifully as it eases its way to the body ... AROMA: the grapefruit rocks the nostrils; spruce, coconut, fresh biscuit and perfurmed flowers give this beer a tremendously varied profile...the draw alone is an experience ...PALATE: alive with carbonation, with a sizzling finish from teeth to throat that streaks and holds ...TASTE: as promised, grapefruit overloads the senses and dominates the other citrus fruits vying for attention; melon and lemon are detectable; the resinous pinecone is undeniable late; the malt base counters the hops deluge and dams the intensity with biscuit... OVERALL: just another in the long line of West Coast IPAs that could be a ritual with me if I were married to the idea of one style; the flavor crushes the experience through an intense wall of hops...at 7.5 ABV, a perfect balance of strength and sipability...

At this point I’m too inebriated to properly rate this beer. I must revisit it though because it’s refreshing and tart and really good.

Clear orange golden color with a fine white head. Nice lacing. Toffee, caramel, over the top tropical and hoppy aroma. Medium (+) body and a fine carbonation. Tad to sweet. To much caramel/toffee, harse fruity, resinous and grapefruit hoppy. Not good. Will like to try a fresher one.

Tap at star bar in Chicago. Gold with small white head. Nice hop aroma. Alcohol, sugar, then gentle hops. Well balanced and nice finish. Sweet and pine. Very good.
