An instant classic, Union Jack is the recipient of numerous awards including back to back wins at the Great American Beer Festival. Union Jack is abound with hop aroma and character. In fact this well balanced, west coast IPA is dry hopped 3 separate times, each lot giving it more and more of the grapefruit citrus hop aroma and flavor it is known for. Overall it utilizes over 4 pounds of pacific northwest hops per barrel.

Bottle - Clear golden color, nice head. This is not a very fruity IPA, nevertheless it provides a unique aroma experience. Very well balanced. Of course the hoppy aromas are evident but it is the very long lasting bitter-hoppy ending, what makes this beer so great.

Bottle at home (bottled 02/11/16). Pours clear amber with a small white head. Aroma of fruity hops, citrus, orange peel, peach, sweet malts. Taste is moderate sweet and moderate to heavy bitter, fruity citrus, sweet malts, hoppy bitterness, dry ending, bitter resiny hoppy aftertaste. Nice.

In terms of what’s considered the quintessential California hop-forward beer, Union Jack provides the full experience. A clear gold-orange pour. A bright, citrusy and piney nose. A flavor profile that plays to both bitter and sweet. Grapefruit, tangerine, orange, honey, and spice. A crisp feel with an oily texture and semi-dry finish. Medium body and carbonation. The booze comes through just slightly. For as big and hoppy as it is, you still get a sense of the immense malt backbone hiding beneath. It’s not all punishment with this aggressive beauty.

Smells of line resin citrus fruits. Nice golden amber color with large white head that slowly dissipates. Tastes starts of a bit malty then you get a creamy pine resin flavor smooth bitter finish. Medium sticky body with nearly flat carbonation Not a fan. Great flavor but the lack of carbonation Really made this ale miss the high mark. Nice IPA and the creaminess is something different for an IPA.

Pours an amber from a bottle, pine hop aroma, but falls flat in the mouth, although drinkable. Meh.

On tap. Amber and very clear with nice white head. Not too strong citrus hops aromas with some resins and floral background. Light to medium body with little bit alcohol feeling with the first sip. Then very well balanced. Quite drinkable, very good IPA.

Bottle. Quite clear amber, thick, frothy, slightly off white head. Restrained, but enjoyable citrus hop aromas, with a touch of spice. Citrus, grassy and slightly resinous, bitter hop flavours dominate, touch of stone fruit with an underlying malt sweetness towards the end of the beer which adds incredible balance and drinkability. I was expecting an English style IPA, but very much an American. Fantastic beer.
