An instant classic, Union Jack is the recipient of numerous awards including back to back wins at the Great American Beer Festival. Union Jack is abound with hop aroma and character. In fact this well balanced, west coast IPA is dry hopped 3 separate times, each lot giving it more and more of the grapefruit citrus hop aroma and flavor it is known for. Overall it utilizes over 4 pounds of pacific northwest hops per barrel.

Bottle in pint glass from The Drinkery, Londonderry NH. Aroma is surprising amount of bready malt and yeasty dough smell, along with fruit and herbs. Appearance is mildly hazy orange gold with trace sparkle, less than finger-width foamy white head with poor retention and negligible lacing. Taste is balanced fruity sweetness and hoppy bitterness. Palate is light to medium bodied with thick texture and lively carbonation and mixed sweet/bitter and dry finish. Overall, this is a nice beer but I was expecting to be blown away given all the hype surrounding it.

Golden and lightly cloudy with one finger of head. Head lasts long and has good lacing. Strong floral hop aroma and light citrus. Lots of hop character without being very bitter. Lightly sweet with tastes of lemongrass and pine. A good beer if I’m in the mood for a lot of hops.

A deep golden coloured beer with a thick and frothy white head. A strong hoppy aroma on opening the can. A huge hop aroma in the glass, grassy and piney, citrus fruit essential oils and just a hint of fresh coriander (cilantro). Dry mouthfeel. The taste follows on from the aroma, huge mouth puckering hop flavours, the grass and pine elements lead the way, bringing along the fresh herb, then the citrus fruit comes through, oily orange, grapefruit and tangerine, plus a touch of lime! There is an interesting background bitterness that can only be likened to fresh, pre-roasted cocoa or coffee beans! The finish is long, lingering and bitter with all the elements staying on. Can from Beers of Europe.
