In fact this well balanced, west coast IPA is dry hopped 3 separate times, each lot giving it more and more of the grapefruit citrus hop aroma and flavor it is known for. Overall it utilizes over 4 pounds of pacific northwest hops per barrel.

On draught at some pub in Portland OR. Pours amber-orange with white head. Great nose on this one. Pine needles and resin, grapefruit, and decent bitter finish. Scrumptious. I’ll have another. Alcohol is well-hidden.

West USA trip 2010. On tap @ PIB. The aroma has citrus and mandarins. Clear, copper-amber coloured beer with a thin, white head. The taste is sweetisch, bitter, has caramel, mandarins, some pine, spice and citrus. Bit sticky mouthfeel.

Bottle from Total Wine Fredericksburg, VA. Pours an attractive clear, well carbonated copper color with a big fluffy off white head. Aroma was of nice citrus and pine hops, and some light malts. Taste is nice, citrus and pine hops with a light tropical fruit note. Unfortunately this bottle was more towards the end of the lifespan of an IPA, but none the less this was still a very solid brew. Would love to try this fresh.

Pours amber-orange into a tulip, lacy off-white head. Delicious aroma of grapefruit, pine, floral character, light candied apricot and honey undertones. Flavor is sweet oranges and grapefruit, honey-caramel malt with light spicy hops in the finish. Smooth, medium body with a little bite. Fantastic IPA with a winning blend of hops.

On Tap at the Firestone Walker tasting room in Paso Robles. It poured a nice amber with a foamy head. The hop content was very evident in the aroma as I raised the taster glass to take a sip. I was expecting an overwhelming hop bite but it was pleasantly smooth. A very nicely balanced IPA with a hidden kick at 7.5%.

Draft at Downtown Joe’s, Napas. POW! Silly huge Cascade nose from a glass of clear gold with fine white diminishing head. FW house flavor is there; it’s similar to Lagunitas’. Bitterness is not profound, just there to shore up the peachy, orangey hop flavors and delicate sweetness. This is a very sneaky strong beer with medium body and no heat.

22oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass. Bottling date is 4/22/10 so we are definitely towards the end of this one’s shelf life. A nice inch and a half of head forms and leaves impressive lacing as it dissipates. Nice, bright, golden yellow-orange color. The nose has tangy pineapple and citrus hop qualities and a healthy dose of malty sweetness to it. A bit sweeter than I prefer but still well balanced. Mouthfeel is full bodied and medium-heavy. This is definitely a big beer. Pine and pineapple flavors tickle the tongue before a tidal wave of bitter hops rushes across the palate. Surprisingly lively hops for a relatively old bottle. Not very much carbonation but the hops are still crisp enough to overpower the majority of the malt with their resiny bitterness. Very drinkable for a beer that should probably be in the imperial/double class.

American Beer Distro ($11): Looks pretty standard, with a not very formidable white head that leaves a nice layer of lacing. Slightly hazy light copper body. When you pop the cap off this beer, the aroma is noticeable about 3 or 4 feet away. That is where you get the floral and citrusy hops flowing all through the air and later all up into your mouth. There is a gently boozy note in the aroma, along with a pleasant amount of dirt. Upon putting it in my mouth, you get tingly hops, that are bitter, but not excessively. A mellow, mildly sweet aspect in the finish. Moderate aftertaste of all the hops A smoky note is detectable somewhere around the middle of the beer. Citrus is there, but they seem to be in dialectical conflict with the hops. Overall a quite excellent IPA, although falls short of the best ones I have had by a slim margin.
