An instant classic, Union Jack is the recipient of numerous awards including back to back wins at the Great American Beer Festival. Union Jack is abound with hop aroma and character. In fact this well balanced, west coast IPA is dry hopped 3 separate times, each lot giving it more and more of the grapefruit citrus hop aroma and flavor it is known for. Overall it utilizes over 4 pounds of pacific northwest hops per barrel.

My new favorite from Firestone Brewing along with their Unfilted DBA.. Union Jack is on the strong side of the single IPA Spectrum 7.5% ABV yet extremely balanced with enough malt to counter the heafty hop additions. Aroma of grapefruit, and cool pine needles, a beautiful burnt orange hue, lacing is a bit weak but the flavors can’t be beat.

UPDATED: JAN 11, 2014 This 22 oz bottle was purchased at Whole Foods. I was looking for an IPA that I have not had. The IPA poured with huge frothy head that filled the glass. The color of gold was mostly clear, very attractive. The hopping three times has an impact on the the citrus aroma at the start. The medium body IPA is a delight to enjoy. The carbonation would be considered lively. The finish was very smooth with only a mild lingering bitterness. Tasted more in 12 oz bottles in the Outer banks. Your whole mouth is assaulted with a dry bitterness.

Bottle pours goldish amber with white head. Aromas are floral and citrus. Tastes are citrus, caramel malt and floral notes. Finish is long and bitter but balanced with sweetness. Nothing fancy, just an excellent IPA.

Pours clear amber, with a medium white head, very fine lasting lacing. Aromas of pine resin, grapefruit, caramel, biscuit, with just a hint of bubblegum. Medium body, smooth and dry, medium carbonation. Mild malt sweetness, a tiny bit crisp mid-palate, medium strong bitter finish, with a light lingering bitterness. This is a classy IPA: complex, aromatic, and potently bitter; but it doesn’t forget the importance of good malts and yeast.

beautiful to inspect in the glass, clear gold, good effervescence and fading one finger pure white head which laces with the best of them. Nose is mostly cascade geraniol (lavender) and light citrus. Mouthfeel is medium. This is one of the first ipas I have had which used Simcoe only for the bittering, so you can’t smell or taste the cattiness that I don’t mind but many do. As a chemist, I am interested in such things and those catty notes seem to derive from a thiol-ketone present when Simcoe is added in the dry hopping. These thiols can also impart an garlic-onion note that some respond negatively to in certain IPAs and DIPAs. All in all a great, sessionable IPA

Pours a light amber with very little head. Aroma of honey, citrus and herbal hops. Taste is medium bodied with a little sweetness with honey, citrus and a little malt. Pretty good, a little sweet for me.

(bottle) pours a clear golden colour with a frothy white head. aroma of heavy resin, with a light tropical fruitiness, some straciatella, caramel and lavender. flavour is again heavily resinous, though also quite floral, with notes of mango, passion fruit and caramel. medium to heavy-bodied with soft carbonation and a bitter finish.

Foxy to reddish beer, slightly reddish-coloured head. Dull nose, dusty and oxydized, bad bottle? Citrus, especially oranges in the flavour, but again oxyidation obvious. Dull, flattish palate. Probably an old or skunked bottle, retrying in order.

Clear amber pour with white head. Hoppy aroma-pineapple. Taste is so good. Nice balance of hops and mal. It leaves a nice fruity hop aftertaste. This is a remarkable beer.
