COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
An instant classic, Union Jack is the recipient of numerous awards including back to back wins at the Great American Beer Festival. Union Jack is abound with hop aroma and character. In fact this well balanced, west coast IPA is dry hopped 3 separate times, each lot giving it more and more of the grapefruit citrus hop aroma and flavor it is known for. Overall it utilizes over 4 pounds of pacific northwest hops per barrel.

Bottled on 11/16/12 (damn, I’m tempted to give an extra tenth every time a brewery does this). Nose contains massive green hop aroma, fresh and exciting but also a little homebrew(e)y, and though the spiciness manages to peak through the mist, the malts are all but hidden. For some I’d imagine this is ideal, but it’s just not my thing. Clear golden-orange body with a lightly foamy head. Lightly bitter taste (picks up slightly toward the end), not very sweet but no malt backbone either, the hops just have nothing to build on. More yeasty than doughy or malty, clean, light-medium body. This isn’t far off from what I’d imagine an extremely mild hopshot to taste like, and it’s hard not to feel a little disappointed.

West coast IPA. Pacific Northwest hop aroma. Bitterness initially is puckering then mellows to hoppy lupine deliciousness.

Super excited to finally try this one. 16oz draft on vacation. No head with a syrupy golden color. Huge aromas of flowers, grapefruit, flight resin. Nice hopping with a good malt backbone. Pretty thick on the palate, medium carbonation, dry bitter finish. Great IPA.

Pours a light Amber color (my color might be off do to the dim lighting at the pub) with a nice white head. Head retention is good. Bitterness, spice, citrus, pine, pineapple and hop aroma. Flavors of citrus, hop bitterness, slight ginger, tangerines, slight oranges, pepper, pine and nice warmth of alcohol. Slight oily finish in your mouth and a nice spicy/citrus after taste that goes all the way to you stomach. Awesome IPA.

Draft. Deep amber-gold, completely translucent and capped with a fizzy white head. The aroma, as you would expect from a beer that’s been double dry-hopped, is bright -- grass, pineapple, guava, tangerine, a touch of mint. The flavor adds grapefruit to the mix, the fruit’s bitter juice and peel balancing the sweeter tropic tones of the hops. Honey-like maltiness plays off the resinous blend and adds apricot notes. I learned today that this beer won back-to-back GABF golds in 2008 and 2009; it’s easy to see how.

Light orange colour, white head. Aroma of caramel, light tropical fruit, peaches. Taste is light to medium bitter, a bit sweet. Light to medium body, slick texture, soft to average carbonation. Very nice and hoppy.
