An instant classic, Union Jack is the recipient of numerous awards including back to back wins at the Great American Beer Festival. Union Jack is abound with hop aroma and character. In fact this well balanced, west coast IPA is dry hopped 3 separate times, each lot giving it more and more of the grapefruit citrus hop aroma and flavor it is known for. Overall it utilizes over 4 pounds of pacific northwest hops per barrel.

UPDATED: OCT 26, 2015 Bottled on 11/16/12 (damn, Iím tempted to give an extra tenth every time a brewery does this). Nose contains massive green hop aroma, fresh and exciting but also a little homebrew(e)y, and though the spiciness manages to peak through the mist, the malts are all but hidden. For some Iíd imagine this is ideal, but itís just not my thing. Clear golden-orange body with a lightly foamy head. Lightly bitter taste (picks up slightly toward the end), not very sweet but no malt backbone either, the hops just have nothing to build on. More yeasty than doughy or malty, clean, light-medium body. This isnít far off from what Iíd imagine an extremely mild hopshot to taste like, and itís hard not to feel a little disappointed. [2013.01.28: 2.9]

Bottled 08/27/15, so about two months old, about the same age as the last bottle. Pours much more distinctly orange, even getting into coppery-brown, with a frothy but short bright white head. This nose is much better, heavy resin with classic grapefruit, oily and juicy but not pushing floral. Also missing some of the dank I remember from much fresher batches. Tastewise, firm bitterness with great resin character, rough without scratch, again very juicy of grapefruit and orange and tangerine with peels, malt is plain and very weak. Touch of spice, some wood. Full and very clean body, touch rubbery-astringent in the long aftertaste. Iíd like another shot at a super-fresh bottle! [2015.10.26: 3.3]

35cl bottle at home. Clear amber pour with a thin white head. Grapefruit, oranges, lemon zest, caramel. Smooth texture and a sticky bitter-sweet aftertaste.

Pours clear, golden and amberish at the same time. Fruity and piney hop aroma, decent West Coast feel to it. Hops are strong also in the taste but everything is nicely balanced with the body. Sweetish body but hidden with hops. Actually very clean and just perfectly executed IPA, sort of like an etalon for the style. Will definitely drink it again, maybe even a lot.

Can from Deguchiya. Pours a golden copper with a finger of foam. Ruby red grapefruit and orange drive the nose with a light bit of mango as it warms. Well-balanced, caramel, biscuit, piney bitterness. Overly bitter on the finish and becomes a little much. A classic West-Coast IPA with balance though.

I do not wax on poetically about beer but I do know the quality of a beer once tasted. This review is not about my tastes but reinforces the numbers, which are arbitrary.

On tap at Brandís Steakhouse (Las Vegas, NV). Amber/golden body with a thin, white foamy/creamy head. Bold hoppy aroma with herbal and piney hints. Its sharp hoppy taste carries woody and herbal notes. Ends with a long bitter finish. Half way between an IPA and a DIPA.

Tap at Keyaki. Nice. Caramel, light hoppiness, bit of resin. Good stuff. Joint favourite of the set.

Draught at Keyaki. Decent stuff but the caramel malt somewhat seems to dominate the citrus and pine hops, fairly dry finish with light boozy notes. Not overly impressed but may revisit in better conditions.

355ml bottle at home. Clear golden with a medium white soapy head. Light to medium body with low to moderate carbonation. Quite bitter with nice fruity sweetness. Citrus, grapefruit, tropical fruits, malts and caramel. Very good IPA.

Bottle - Clear golden color, nice head. This is not a very fruity IPA, nevertheless it provides a unique aroma experience. Very well balanced. Of course the hoppy aromas are evident but it is the very long lasting bitter-hoppy ending, what makes this beer so great.
