3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
(bottle from bhensonb, thank you sir!) Pours black with a medium tan head that quickly settles to a very thin cap with minimal lacing. Aroma is potent and quite enjoyable, with plenty of Sumatra coffee scents, peanut butter, faint wood, roasted malt, and chocolate. Just when I thought it was safe to award this an 8, a little snap pea scent slides in with further warming. A trip to the vegetable crisper confirms this. Flavor follows suit with good Sumatra coffee undertones, peanut butter, and chocolate that yields to a very strong and lingering roasted malt finish that is coupled with wood. Light bit of vanilla here emerges and adds another level of complexity. The mouthfeel isnít particularly velvety, and is a bit thin, and the carbonation does not help matters as itís rather lively. Overall this is certainly an enjoyable session beer, and itís one Iíd regularly consume if it were readily available.

24 feb 2012, bottle. Dark ruby, virtually black. Nose is dark chocolate and some wine notes. Med body and a bit fizzy. Chocolate bitterness and oval time maltiness. Nice. A bit velvety as well.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
A mildly bitter beer, rife with flavors of dark chocolate and charred wheat. For an oatmeal stout, this brew feels more sedentary than it should be. This Firestone offering isnít terrible, but itís far more underdeveloped than silkier, more robust stouts found elsewhere. Bypass this tap.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft @ APEX. Damn I love this place. Pours dark black/brown with a small beige head. The aroma is chocolate, roast, vanilla, and oak. The flavor starts with chocolate, caramel, vanilla, and light roast with some vanilla and cocomut. Quite sweet in the finish, but I really am liking the complexity.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Solid black, creamy brown head. Aroma of roast malts and a milky sweetness. Taste is the same great balance of roast and sweet malt with a dry, bitter finish. A really awesome beer at a great price. Thick texture, heavy body. medium high carbonation.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Bearcat Country aka my hometown. Pours a deep brown to black with tan head that keeps its place the entire beer. Aroma is cacao with some oatmeal, cinnamon, dark fruit notes. Really has some oatmeal raisin cookie notes to it but not sure if that is just from the name. Taste, espresso with some sweetness that is quickly overshadowed by the bitterness. Coffee forward on this one but not overpowering for a non-coffee drinker. Overall, awesome and something much deeper than the ABV would indicate.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap at Monkís Kettle, SF. Nice silky looking dark brown pour. Nose is quite sharp for what I expected to be a rich oatmeal stout, with the chocolate notes suffused with a bit of molasses and char. Mouthfeel is, yes, rather velvety. Tons of coffee and licorice in the flavors, a bit blunt and lacking the mellowed balance Iíd expect from a beer of this ABV. Still fairly decent, though.
