A decadent Oatmeal Stout brimming with cocoa and espresso aromas. This beer features a rich, dark chocolate and roasted coffee flavor with a creamy mouth feel and wonderfully dry finish. The addition of U.S. grown fuggles hops contributes the perfect amount of bitterness to this exceptionally balanced beer.

12 oz bottle. Pours a pitch black with a thin head that dissipates quickly. Very light on the nose. Taste is mild, goes down very smooth for a stout, not overly complex, alcohol on the finish. Pretty good as long as you arenít expecting something heavier.

This beer was ok. The flavors did not come through as I would have liked, but it was decent.

Pours deep brown with a small tan head and lacing. It has a nice toasty aroma with some coffee and chocolate. The coffee is stronger in the flavor, with the chocolate and bourbon more apparent in the aftertaste. A smooth body and great finish too. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

In short: One of my favorite below 6% session stout/porter beer. That simple
How: Bottle 12oz. Consumed relatively fresh (2 months of age?). Bottle sent to me by mcberko, thanks a lot Matt
The look: Near black body topped by a medium beige head with medium retention
In long: Nose is pleasantly all over the place proposing roast, citrus fruits, cocoa nibs, milk chocolate, toasted oats, leafy hopsÖ and more. Taste is incredibly smooth yet complex and very nourishing. Chocolate cake, semi-sweet caramel, roast, creamy oats, refreshing citrus fruits, vanilla, leafy hops, toasted chocolate chips cookies, moreÖ. Just enough smooth bitterness to provide balance. Body is creamy and velvety with many soft bubbles, wonderful mouthfeel here. Iím a session-beer lover but for stouts/porters I usually prefer the higher gravity ones except for a few exceptions and this Velvet Merlin is a major exception. A true kick-ass stout that satisfied me as much as a nice impy stout but remained as sessionnable as my favorite session stouts (St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout, othersÖ). Widely available and at around $3/bottle, if this gets a good distribution on the east-coast this beer will become my session stout/porter. Underrated session beer, some beer snobs get angry at people who donít give a good score to a great beer, but not me, I donít have donít have any hard feelings towards those tasteless scumbags.

Pours a black color with a soft tan head. Taste is full with chocolate and coffee notes. I really donít get bourbon though. Finishes clean without an after taste.

Pours thickish black with a slow dissipating creamy head. The taste is akin to the St. Ambroise: highlighting the bitterness, bulked up mouthfeel. Though still good drinkability. Leaving a moderate bitter coffee aftertaste. Malty and roast aroma.
