Tap sample at the brewery. Very nice, rich and cholately stout. Very classic and Iím appreciative that they didnít cram it full of hops and crank the ABV up through 10. Thanks for not following the crowd.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Had this a couple years ago at Portlandís Holiday Ale Festival and didnít rate it. Also had some yesterday at Baileyís Taproom in Portland, OR. Colour... nearly black with a thin khaki head. Nose... quite roasty with hints of Postum and day old coffee. Palate... thinner mouthfeel than I recall from a couple years ago but still plenty roasty with with bits if dark chocolate, dried chicory root, creme burlee, hints of Bourbon and a lengthy roasted finish.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Light, airy, but not dilute. Mostly grassy hops on the nose, malt noted but not outstanding. Flavor nuanced, light, creamy, a good balance between malt and hops. As far as the less heavy beers go, this one was extremely refreshing.

Several 16oz samples on tap from the Davis Graduate. Aroma is very pleasant with some lightly sweet chocolate notes along with some metallic undertones. Nicely aromatic. Mostly transparent mahogany body present with a nice, bubbly orange-tan head. Starts sweet and quite chocolatey before it becomes somewhat roasted in the middle. Followed by a touch of woodiness, too. Very smooth-bodied, and extremely drinkable. Really, really, NICE! PS - I didnít appreciate much of the bourbon flavor from the barrel aging, and I am quite ok with this.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: DEC 2, 2010 Opaque dark-brown with highlighting along the edges of the glass. The aroma, unlike the flavor, was fantastic. There are notes of chocolate, coffee, roasty malt, dry oak and a well-balanced bourbon flavor that meshed very well unlike some bourbon barrel-aged beers. The taste had all of these flavors, but they were far more muted. The bourbon flavor became almost watery. The feel may have been the real culprit. It was much too thin for a stout, much less a barrel-aged stout. A cask would likely bring out the creamy lush mouthfeel of the oatmeal stout. At any rate, it was still a good beer, and they get points for not overwhelming a relatively small stout with bourbon barrel-aging. Would be nice to see it in a cask.
Edit (12/2/10): Bottle. Iíve been drinking this regularly since six-packs arrived and like it even better now. Excellent chocolate aroma/flavor, little bourbon. Smooth. Tons of flavor for the size. Great stout.

Very dark brown. Nice earthy, roasty character with dry, toasty malts. Full body. Smooth. Quite oaty, also sweet and maybe light butterscotch. A fairly moreish beer, something I genuinely appreciate in an oatmeal stout.

Draft @ Brouwers. Inky black. Excellent doily lace is even at first, then scatters. Aroma has fresh malt, very pure and unadulterated. Sweet and gluteny. Whole oats are the most apparent flavors, has very little in the way of chocolate. Sweet. Oily palate. Creamy oatmeal, gluten character. Has a pure and simple nature. Sweet. Mild roast. Medium to low complexity. Well made but not wowtastic.
