3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle… Pours a cloudy, deep, dark brown with minimal head. The aroma is first and foremost chocolaty, but there is a huge nuttiness to it – pistachios and almonds – alongside splashes of cola and espresso and a dab of vanilla. Full-bodied and silky smooth with modest carbonation. Flavor-wise, sweet roasty malts are the stars of this show, although a semblance of balance is maintained by burnt malt and hop bitterness. Sweet, mocha, grassy finish.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Capone’s. On Nitro. Dark brown pour with a smaller sized off white head. I would have put this as an oatmeal stout. Lots of oats, with chocolate, roast, wood, and some vanilla. Bitter chocolate in the finish.

3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours thickish black with a slow dissipating creamy head. The taste is akin to the St. Ambroise: highlighting the bitterness, bulked up mouthfeel. Though still good drinkability. Leaving a moderate bitter coffee aftertaste. Malty and roast aroma.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sample on Day 2 of the Aces & Ales Strong Beer Festival on 08/13/2011. Cola-colored pour with a medium light beige head that dissipates steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Pours black with a medium tan head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Roasty aroma of malt and coffee, along with a touch of chocolate. Medium, creamy body with flavors of mocha, mild hops and malt. The finish is sweet milk chocolate. Above average overall.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of rich roasted malt, slightly sweet oats, a little bourbon and vanilla - the roasted malt is most pronounced though. Flavour matches accordingly, with the slightly sweet roasted malts and burnt flavours upfront. Not much presence of the bourbon barrel aging, thought there is maybe a subtle oak and vanilla character buried underneath somewhere. Palate is velvety as the name suggests. Very solid oatmeal stout.

UPDATED: APR 30, 2014 > The superlative easy to find, cheap, low abv roasty stout
[ Bottle ][ Texas Liquor ][ 12oz ][ $1.50 ][ Russian River Nonic Pint ][ 4/29/14 ]
>> This beer is do for a re-rate as it has improved dramatically over the years to become one of the best stouts on the market for the money and for the abv. It is dark, it has a rocky mocha head. The aroma is robust with mild coffee, smoke, cocoa powder, dark chocolate. Taste is bitter, never thin, with powerful roast and a silkier, dense body that puts many RIS to shame. Really, this is a masterpiece that we should all appreciate more.
355mL courtesy of argo0. This poured a deep brune with a medium tan head. Aroma of smoked meat, really a massive amount of smokiness. Taste is roasty, some milk chocolate, light, some tart lemon coming through. Fairly thin on the palate. No bourbon comes through. 12/21/2010 7/4/6/4/13=3.4

Coffee roast aroma. Dark coloured a little rich on the palate strong in alcohol hoppy and fruity with a hint of dryness in a bitter coffee roast finish.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours deep black with thin to no tan head from 12 oz bottle. Aroma brings notes of char, ash, some roast, burnt toast, coffee, some sweet vanilla and toffee, hints of anise in there as well with hints of chocolate as well. Taste is much more balanced without much of the char and ash, still hints of that in the beginning mingle with some chocolate, coffee, some sweet toffee, vanilla and hints of bourbon come through finishing with a nice mix of sweet, bitter, and slightly dry. Medium bodied with a nice fine carb. Well done, especially for the price!
