On cask as Velvet Merlin. From what Iíve heard this isnít different from the Merkin. Pours with a lasting off white head over a murky deep brown body. Aromas of wood, brown sugar, cola, molasses, chocolate, earth, fudge and vanilla. Flavors of brown sugar, coffee, chocolate, wood, toffee and molasses. Really smooth and creamy. Light bubbles.

On tap at Stone. Pours with a black body with no head and no real lace. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and vanilla. Taste is chocolate and floral with a light spiciness, light smokiness, and a light oak barrel character. Light bubbles and syrupy. Very enjoyable.

My Bottom Line:
Chocolate and caramel malts profit from blackberry esters and vanilla undercurrents to develop a satisfying pint of Stout.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the blackness with dark brown hues.
-This is another Firestone Walker brew with a round body. I donít find this one as coherent with the flavour profile as their strong aleís though.
-The tiny, prickly bubbles donít exactly gel with the portly dextrins.
-Light wooden hop bitterness seals each sip.
On tap at Toronado SF.

Squat bottle from Blue Dog. Pours dark brown with 1-finger clingy tan head. Nose is roasty dark malt, cacao, mild coffee and oak. Tastes dry, with flavors of black patent malts, cacao, some hops, coffee, and a bit of earthy oak.

2010-06-27. Very dark brown body with a tan head. Pleasant sweet aroma, light toasty malt character, sweet malt, hints at wood, something else I can not quite place, but I like it. 7+ Flavour is similar, mocha, mild roast and sweet malt core. Something that rounds everything up together nicely. Modest bourbon. 7+ Super smooth average palate is lightly carbonated and while lovely it is light for a stout. Pretty solid, everything just works well together. On Tap at Green Dragon, Portland.

355mL courtesy of argo0. This poured a deep brune with a medium tan head. Aroma of smoked meat, really a massive amount of smokiness. Taste is roasty, some milk chocolate, light, some tart lemon coming through. Fairly thin on the palate. No bourbon comes through.

Bottled. Poured deep cola brown with a fine cap of tan head.. looked good in the glass. The aroma was sweet and very toasty, with black malts, chocolate, and vanilla leading the way.. sweet and decadent. The flavor found very lightly-smoked black malts and smooth rolled oats at the core.. vanilla was laced throughout.. just a kiss of bourbon accented perfectly on the back-end.. delicious stuff! Medium-bodied and well-balanced on the palate.. very smooth feel to it.. loved it!

Sample on Day 2 of the Aces & Ales Strong Beer Festival on 08/13/2011. Cola-colored pour with a medium light beige head that dissipates steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Pours black with a medium tan head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Roasty aroma of malt and coffee, along with a touch of chocolate. Medium, creamy body with flavors of mocha, mild hops and malt. The finish is sweet milk chocolate. Above average overall.

Draft. Nitro. Blackish beer with a nice dark beige nitro head. Roasty aroma. Roasty, dark chocolate flavor with backing sweetness. Medium body. Lingering chocolate with a tannic astringency starting to show. Labelled as an oatmeal stout, but oatmeal well hidden.
