COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
10 Types of Hops - 100 IBU’s - 10% alc by vol. - Oak Barrel Aged - October, 2003

The Mighty Fish Brewers first produced 10² Barley Wine Ale to celebrate Fish Brewing Company’s tenth anniversary. The ale was so good and the response to it so overwhelmingly positive that it has become the crown jewel of our new RELEASES line. Ten different hops - Horizon, Chinook, Columbus, Willamette, Tradition, Northern Brewer, Santiam, Tettmanger, Cascade and Golding, in the order of their use - give Ten Squared a unique hop character which has to be tasted to be believed. Even with 100 IBUs, this brew sports a strong malt backbone. Two-row Pale, Caramel 40, Caramel 75, Special B and Aromatic malts impart remarkable balance for such a hop monster. This is smooth ale with surprising similarities to ten year old malt whiskey. Produced for the Holidays 10² Highly-Hopped Barley Wine Ale is usually available into late spring.

This beer grows on you as it warms. Deep mahogony tone and somewhat cloudy appearance. Very sweet and malty with a somewhat astringent quality to it. Malt has an english accept to it with the hops balancing it out in a overly bitter and less aromatic way. I like this but it is somewhat simple and lacking complexity.

Great hop aroma. Good malt body to balance the extreme hop bitterness and finish. Should age quite well. A very good IPA, but I am not sure about the double part.

A very nice IPA. I thought it was quite light for a double IPA though. A nice fruity fragrant floral aroma, with a bit of astringent acidic aromas in the nose. Flavor is very light and fruity, nicely hopped and not over the top.

Pours a rich ruby copper with a big thick creamy tan head. Aroma is not like other imperial IPAs. It seems to be more complicated, an onslaught of floral, sweet, and bitter hops which provide an air of mustiness, possibly a result of the barrel aging. Body starts thick, syrupy and viscous but thins toward the end. Some sweet caramel malt fades quickly into a very tangy bitter finish. Alcohol is well hidden, but so are the other flavors behind the wall of bitterness. This just doesn't have the finesse of a Ruination or Dreadnaught, but may mellow with age. Somehow adding this many different hops just doesn't mesh together well.

Murky brown pour, with an offwhite head. The aroma is hoppy. The flavor is extremely bitter and hoppy.

First whiff from opening the bottle brings cascade hops. Pours nice, cloudy deep amber with a tight beige head and good lacing. Big hop aroma. Thick bodied smooth and chewy with tons of hops.Flavor is on the bitter side like Arrogant Bastard, and has enough malt to hold it all together. Very bitter finish, but very enjoyable also.

Pours a very nice ruby with a thin off white head (almost tan), and spotty lacing. Strong citrus hop aroma with some sweet malts and a backing of alcohol. Flavor starts with a bit of roast malt, then the bitter hops kick in finishing dry with a nice alcohol bite. Smooth palate with a medium body leaving a good hop prescence behind. I have to thank JagerQueen for picking this up for Buck_Dich and thank Buck himself for giving me a damn fine I2PA for my 300th!

Dark ruby color with a thick creamy off-white head. The lacing is sticky in parts and the alcohol doesn't destroy it too bad. The aroma is very hoppy, slightly musty with a complex hop profile, lots going on in the hops department. The malt isn't too matched up in the aroma. The flavor is a little more balanced with an initial roastyness of caramel that turns into a dry sting of the hops as it works its way down your palate. The overall feel to this beer is very mellow considering the intimidating title. Once you get into this one it really starts growing on you. Wish I had another, or maybe another half (glares at Sham). Thanks JagerQueen!

UPDATED: JUL 28, 2009 Pours with a thick syrupyness. Dark and thick amber with a frothy, tight-bubbled head. Wafting, yeast-cake nose. Thick and chewy texture with a mild carbonation. Strong, in-your-face flavors and alcohol notes (not fusel or spiked, but strong and lasting). Woodsy and earthy aromas. Very mild malt sweetness (toffee and cooked caramel). Electric hops with a healthy bitterness, but not nose-blowing. I find it interesting that when you use three or four different kinds of hops in a beer, you end up with something strange, but when you use 10, it somehow tastes pretty decent. Safety in numbers, I suppose. RERATE: Rich caramel-soaked malts had many layers. Complex hop flavors and aromas were filled with resinous pine, sugared grass, grapefruit and flowers.

UPDATED: DEC 16, 2003 The first thing anyone is going to notice about this beer is the extremely complex aroma coming out of the glass like a sweltering blast of caramel hop alchohol. It is only natural that the beer is going to be big as well, and indeed it is. Blisteringly bitter with a persistent alchohol fire, there seems to be an endless reserve of flavor beneath it all, but only a portion can make it past the abv and IBUs. A touch of toffee is there, along with a very nice buttery caramel malt, but that wonderful balance preserved in the Leviathan and Poseidon seems to be put on hold for the moment.
