COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
10 Types of Hops - 100 IBU’s - 10% alc by vol. - Oak Barrel Aged - October, 2003

The Mighty Fish Brewers first produced 10² Barley Wine Ale to celebrate Fish Brewing Company’s tenth anniversary. The ale was so good and the response to it so overwhelmingly positive that it has become the crown jewel of our new RELEASES line. Ten different hops - Horizon, Chinook, Columbus, Willamette, Tradition, Northern Brewer, Santiam, Tettmanger, Cascade and Golding, in the order of their use - give Ten Squared a unique hop character which has to be tasted to be believed. Even with 100 IBUs, this brew sports a strong malt backbone. Two-row Pale, Caramel 40, Caramel 75, Special B and Aromatic malts impart remarkable balance for such a hop monster. This is smooth ale with surprising similarities to ten year old malt whiskey. Produced for the Holidays 10² Highly-Hopped Barley Wine Ale is usually available into late spring.

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy deep copper with a small white head that fades quickly leaving decent lacing. Aroma of sweet malt and every hop that they could cram in the kettle with a strong oak backbone. Taste is the same as aroma just a bit harsh. Medium full mouthfeel with a very strong bitterness. A good beer but needs a little more balance.

Draft at Eulogy. Very dark black amber pour. Small but lacey head. Thick dark sweet body. Lots of pine flavor - almost turpentine. Deep dark resin notes. Molasses. Pitch black burned sugar at the bottom of the pot. Heavy alcohol. Tastes flammable. Potent. Very dark barleywine.

Pours dark amber/mahogany. Aroma of rum soaked fruit, toffee, pine. Taste is pretty hoppy, mostly bitter pine resin, dark fruit sweetness, lots of malt body. Pretty hefty stuff.

Bomber purchased fourteen months ago at Holiday Wine Cellar ($9.99). Pours a lovely dark auburn hue with one finger of light tan head. Aroma of pine forest, sticky citrus, sweet caramel, and earthy herbs. Flavor of thick resiny hops with notes of grapefruit peel and herbs followed by a significant maltiness with notes of toffee, brown sugar, stewed dark fruits, and whiskey. Flavor improves as it warms. Finishes with a small amount of caramel sweetness. High booze level is generally well hidden here. Interesting and tasty barley wine...did not realize that this was so hop-forward or I might have opened it sooner (though it is now nicely balanced between the hops and malts). (352, 683)

Very full, complex malty taste with a long, lingering hops aftertaste. Great, almost oily, mouthfeel.

Bottle. Aroma has notes of citrus, pine, resin, grass, caramel and toasted malts. Very dark red amber hue with an average off-white head that left little lace. Flavor is very sweet and bitter. Palate is very full bodied and oily soft. Overall a very hoppy Barley Wine that gets much better as it warms. The hops detract from this beer now but with a year or two of aging it should be killer. Just a little too hot right now.

Clear, dark ruby red in color. Thick, frothy head with Constallation lacing. Aroma consist of licorice, alcohol, and a.hint of cherry. Taste like hard alcohol. It really does taste like cheap whiskey. Medium carbonation with a sticky texture. It has a long hard alcohol finish which kind of turns me away from this beer. If I wanted hard alcohol I would have had a shot. Not for me.

Deep amber pour soft off white head lots of sticky lacing ... aroma is of mostly caramel malts and bitter rindy grapefruity citrusy hops .... taste of caramel malts, spicy soft and very well put together tons of citrusy bitter grapefruity hops, little piney, lightly floral and spicy bite ..... all the flavors meld so well with the malts .... mouthfeel is smooth, oily and rich with no trace of abv for a 10% brew ... finish is dry spicy and of lingering bitter hops .... very awesome brew

22oz. Bottle: Aroma of hops, citrus, malt, caramel, pine, and some hop oil. Poured copper/deep orange in color with a small, creamy, dense, off-white/tan head that diminished but lasted throughout. Slightly hazy. Sparkling. Good to very good lacing. Flavor is heavily bitter and light to medium sweet. Tastes of malt, pine, hops, light resin, caramel, hop oil, light marijuana, citrus, grapefruit, and slight wood. Medium body. Oily, then dry texture. Average carbonation. Malt, hop, pine, resin, caramel, finish is heavily bitter and light to medium sweet. 10%ABV is completely hidden throughout.

Pours an opaque ruby/amber with a thick tan head...nice lacing and retention. Aroma has some caramely notes and sweet, floral hop notes...pineapple and peach. Flavor has some cereal and loads of hops...earthy, tea, grapefruit, mango, spice...each mouthful showcases different and great hop qualities! Mouthfeel is full...oily and the finish is bitter and dry.

Pours red brown amber, totally clear. Small head, Smell is super potent, rich caramel and spicy hops. Like a lot of caramelized malt, and its thick, but its off set by a huge hop presence, maybe like some pine, but not really super citrusy, just like hoppy bitter smelling and earthy/spicy. Taste has big alcohol upfront, but its not a burn, it blends well with that huge spicy hop. Then big caramel comes in to bind everything, but the alcohol and hops are always there, and interplay with the hop’s huge 100 IBU bitterness. Each of the components are distinct and hugely present. Mouthfeel is on the fuller end of medium bodied, which just suits that caramel character of the malt. Finish is caramel, hop bitterness and alcohol flavour all at once. Huge beer.
