COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
10 Types of Hops - 100 IBU’s - 10% alc by vol. - Oak Barrel Aged - October, 2003

The Mighty Fish Brewers first produced 10˛ Barley Wine Ale to celebrate Fish Brewing Company’s tenth anniversary. The ale was so good and the response to it so overwhelmingly positive that it has become the crown jewel of our new RELEASES line. Ten different hops - Horizon, Chinook, Columbus, Willamette, Tradition, Northern Brewer, Santiam, Tettmanger, Cascade and Golding, in the order of their use - give Ten Squared a unique hop character which has to be tasted to be believed. Even with 100 IBUs, this brew sports a strong malt backbone. Two-row Pale, Caramel 40, Caramel 75, Special B and Aromatic malts impart remarkable balance for such a hop monster. This is smooth ale with surprising similarities to ten year old malt whiskey. Produced for the Holidays 10˛ Highly-Hopped Barley Wine Ale is usually available into late spring.

Deep reddish copper in color with a tan head. Strong, malty, sweet. Dried fruit flavors (fig, raisin, cherry) and a hoppy finish. Dark alcohol taste reminds me of oak aged ales.

2011 version on draft at BPP. Maybe this ws good at one time but it’s just bitter tea leaves now, super astringent, a complete pain to even sip. Big head and lots of lacing though. Truly, a horrible stripped, industrial and astringent barleywine.

Bottle. The color is a hazy amber with white head. The aroma is big on toffee and burnt caramel. The taste is big, good flavor, then burns out nicely with oak. A very solid barleywine. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours orange copper color, low foam retention. Nose is piney, roasted caramel and hints of dried fruits. Bitter taste, hoppy citrusy flavor, resinous medium body mouthfill. Lingering explosion of hops, potent alcohol feel yet not overwhelmingly. Taste of IIIPA rather than a Barley wine.

Rating #1233 - 19.08.2014 - Bottle at Pourhouse. Nut brown pour, bubbly head, not much lacing. Aroma is a cascadey punch, alcohol, pastry dough Taste is an alcoholic blast, lots of hoppy bitterness tempered with a ton of citrusy, malty sweetness on the palate. Just a big bold beer for flavour-lovers. Awesome.

Pretty nice classic barley wine. Dried fruit and hops, sweet but also quite bitter. As with some other Fish beers, I wish it wasn’t so prickly. Takes away from an otherwise decadent brew.

22oz bottle 2/27/15 (Courtesy of TerryR)--40° in snifter-Pours a dark orange/amberish. with a small head. Aroma of dried fruits, candy sugar, malt, toffee, caramel, and hops. Taste of malt, hops, brown sugar, and sweetness. This full bodied brew is well balanced and maybe the bottle I have mellowed a bit but I thought it kicked butt.

Rich malty, earthy aroma. Initial taste is all hops. The 10 variety of hops overwhlems all flavor. Very hoppy, unbalanced finish. Other than the ABV there is absolutely nothing to suggest this is a barleywine ... more like a Double IPA.

Grumbler purchase from Breeze-IN, Juneau AK. This was poured into a chalice. The appearance was a nice hazy golden dark orange to hazed over amber color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute leaving some light lacing stringing itself around the glass. The smell had a strong bitter citrus/piney hops, nice caramel back up, light in the tobacco and a touch of vanilla. The taste was mainly sweet with a sticky strength of bitter hops leading to the aftertaste and then sliding into a dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sipping quality about it. Carbonation was good for me and for the style. Overall, I say this was a pretty good American Barleywine that I would have again. Happy Anniversary, Fish Brewing Company!

Good but was expecting more. Malty nose with piney hop aroma. This beer has a lot going on with multiple layers of malt and hop additions. Bronze in color with a thin head. Weighted palate with average carbonation. Sweet malt and oak flavors with a strong bitterness but not too harsh. Lingering finish.

Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of cereal, nutty, and caramel, cooked orange for the hops, light dough for the yeast, with raisin, dates, wood, nutmeg, mild tobacco and alcohol. Head is small, frothy, beige with fair lacing and good legs, and is mostly diminishing. Color is muddy, with lots of big chunks, medium brown. Flavor starts moderately to heavily sweet and moderately acidic, then finishes moderately sweet and heavily bitter. Palate is medium to full, oily with a soft to lively carbonation and a heavily alcohlic finish. This Barley Wine is a bit harsh in the finish, but it’s mostly bold and rich throughout.
