RCL (864), Boston, Massachusetts, USA Apr 3, 2008 This beer is superb. Super rich and malty. The finish is ever so slightly astringent, curbing the sweetness perfectly. Complex yet super drinkable. Dynamite.
rudolf (1500), Buffalo, New York, USA May 19, 2008 Bottle, shared at the May 2008 tasting. Thanks Paul. Very dark brown, tan head. Nose is caramel & toffee, meaty malt, cherries. Flavor is caramel & toffee, some whiskey, cherries, dry cocoa. buzzoven (33), Japan May 11, 2008 Used to be able to pick this up at Tanakaya but has been absent from the cellar for quite a while. Amber in the glass, decent head. Deep malted roasted raisin flavours. Some tinge of alcohol and a few non-sweet cherry-vanilla notes surprised me. There is some complexity going on here; the balance is a little off...but it didn’t stop me from buying and enjoying it again. Very nice. lb4lb (1090), Austin, Texas, USA May 8, 2008 Bottle shared at tasting.

The aroma is malty up front with a light roast that provides a milk chocolate tone but also some notes of nuts, bread and caramel/toffee. Undertones of oak/vanilla, oregano, orange peel, spicy hops, some smoke, vinous hints and a touch of dark fruits. Rather round on the nose. The flavour is chocolate, caramel, nuts, mild citrus/orange peel and some anise. Vinous with tones of vanilla/oak, grapes and black cherries. The mouthfeel is silky smooth, light sticky and light chewy. Light to medium sweet and light to medium bitter. Spicy and numbing finish with some caramel sweetness lingering. Medium bodied.
