COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all. Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

Theydon_Bois (9109) - The ’Sham, Surrey, ENGLAND - OCT 19, 2014
Bottle shared at BBF 6, 26/09/14. Murky chestnut brown meets dark orange with a moderate off white covering. Nose is dark fruit rinds, spice, fruit cake, brown sugars, light roast. Taste comprises sweetish licks, toffee, toasted brown sugar, fruit loaf, spice. Medium + body, fine carboantion, lightly warming booze in the close. Ok barley wine but far from the great the rating on this one suggest it is!

26/IX/14 - 75cl bottle @ Borefts 2014 (Bodegraven) - BB: n/a, 2000 vintage (2014-1067) Thanks to fonefan for sharing the bottle!

Little cloudy amber to brown beer, small irregular yellowish head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: bit oxidized, caramel, sweet, sugary, dried fruits, orange peel, fruity notes. MF: soft carbon, medium to full body. Taste: pretty oxidized, caramel, sweet, sugary, nice sour twist.

Benzai (8530) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - SEP 30, 2014
Sampled from bottle @ Borefts 2014. Murky brownish color, small off-white head. Aroma is malts, sweetness, overripe fruits. Tastes about the same: malts, sweetness, overripe fruits, lightly sweet-bitter. Medium body and carbonation. Don’t specifically get any barrel aging, and there is some oxidation, but certainly still a nice beer after all those years (bottle from 2000).

750 ml. bottle @ Borefts 2014. Thank you fonefan! 2000 Vintage. Batch 2. Dark brown amber, head only on sides. Good oxidation in the nose, maple, sugar, caramel, figs leaves, surprisingly solid still for the age. Warming mocha taste, leaves, berries, creamy malt, caramel,… Lower carbonation. Has held up surprisingly well for 14 year old beer. Nice. Must have been stellar couple of years ago.

2002 Red Wine Barrel
Tasted on 2/8/14 from a bottle at the RBWG Grand Tasting, massive thanks to springslicker for sharing this huge whale!!! Pours murky caramel brown with some white bubbles that quickly disappear. The nose is nicely vinous, tart fruit, with oxidized caramel aroma. The flavor is the same red wine oak with nutty oxidation, and some caramel malt. The body is medium with no carbonation and a long vinous and caramel malt finish.

Sample @ RBWG Grand Tasting. 2002 vintage. Soupy brown pour with a small head. Nose is pretty oxidized and tired. Fruit leather, cardboard, fruit gums. Taste is tart cherry, hints of balsamic. Some cocoa and roasted malt. Sort of thin, soft on the palate. Showing its age a bit.

750 ml green bottle shared by springslicker at RBWG - wow, thanks! Never thought I’d see this one. 2002 vintage. Pours a hazed orange amber color with no head. Notes of oak, red wine, grapes, apples, earth, sugars, spices, and straw. Some of the other nuance has washed away with time, and there is some oxidation. But for 2002, not a ton. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a vinous mouthfeel. Fun to try.

Bottle shared by Jay at the RBWG 2014 grand tasting, thanks! Pours near black with a brown head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has dark grains and roasted malts with a bit of bourbon coming through. Flavor has bourbon, sweet dark grains and a hint of raisin with bourbon in the finish.
