Commercial Description:
With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all. Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

This 2002 beauty is courtesy of matta, thanks Matt, I’ve been wanting to re-try this one for years. Pours hazy garnet with tan head and showing plenty of carbonation after seven years in this 750mL bottle. The aroma is full of dark fruity esters, wine notes, hints of barrel and a touch of sour barrel odors. The taste is smooth and inviting with initially yielding notes of prunes, plums and ripe cherries. Those nuances soon mingle with oak, red wine notes and a touch or two of sour barrelness. It gets a bit caramel and vanilla like into the finish. Yummy indeed.

Bottle pours a deep amber color with a nice white head. Aromas of caramel, vanilla, and oak. Tastes very sweet initially and finishes fruity and nutty. Medium bodied with a smooth finish. One of the better barleywines I’ve had. Highly recommended..

2002 750ml shared with the Rochester Gathering, August 2009. Very wine-ish in character. The age has actually brought our some out some sourness, like cherries. Very smooth, but slick body. Silky and easy to drink. Glad I got to share it with people that appreciated it.

Bottle at the RB Rochester Gathering, Aug. 30/ 09. Thanks, Shadey! Poured a clear dark reddish copper with a small lingering light amber head. Aromas of oak, grapes, light caramel and a hint of spice. Palate was light bodied crisp and slightly tart. Flavors of oak, carmel and light spice with a crisp lightly tart lingering finish.

750ml bottle, 2000 vintage. Pours a deep rusty brown with a faint reddish hue. Head was beige/ tan in color with great retention. Tons of sweet caramel, toffee, dried tree fruits and some light vinous notes. The flavor held some distant wine tanins, as well as candy sugar, sweet caramel, maple, toffee and pretty much any candied fruit you can imagine. The finish is where I started really picking up the oak in this beer, very long finish, brew was medium to full in body. One of my top 10 beers for sure.....I need more of this!!!!

Bottle at the RB Rochester Gathering, Sept. 09. vintage) Thanks, Shadey! Just when you thought things were winding down, Shadey started pulling out some big beers. I enjoyed the nose on this one. Brandy, alcohol, oak. A bit sour in the palate. Thick syrupy feel. Some cherries, some wood. Nice oak in the back end, dry astringent. A very unique barley wine.

2002 Bottle at the RB Rochester Gathering, Sept. 09. Thanks, Shadey. Big oak aroma, like an aged sherry or a chardonnay, with caramel and light fruit. Low carbonation, and quite sour, as if a bit oxidized. Highly oaked and tangy, with fruity, citrus and sherry flavors. Probably past its best, but still very enjjoyable.

2000 bottle poured in 8/09: Poured espresso brown with a huge white head. Nose was hefty of sweet caramel, toffee, and a little bit of biscuit and booze. No oxidation to taste, very smooth with slight cocoa on the finish, and big sweet malt beginning to end.
