Opaque brown no head. Lots of deep sweet malts with some woody notes. Nice complex dark malts with some nice woody vanilla notes, finishes with some aged bitter hops. sliffy (1966), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jan 15, 2007 2001 Bottle shared at the Columbus Tasting V, shared by OhioDad: Brown pour with a tan head. Aroma, caramel, toffee, some oak. Flavor, caramel, some earthy hops, oaky, some fruits. Really nice, and still doing quite well. LeopoldStoch (201), Green, Ohio, USA Jan 15, 2007 2001 vintage...once again shared by OhioDad. Thanks Scott. I really enjoyed the other wine barrel aged beer from fish tale, the poseidon, and this one was very good as well. Lots of sugars, fruits, and caramels in the nose. Not much hops to speak of. The taste actually showed some signs of hops. The other flavors really melded well with the wine barrel contributions with dark fruits, and caramel malts. Really enjoyable, and I think it has held up well for being 6 or 7 years old. OhioDad (2491), Hilliard, Ohio, USA Jan 15, 2007 750ml bottle 2001 vintagevia trade with indiana red! - Thanks Ken! - Shared at Columbus tasting V - Poured brown with ruby highlights and a verys mall head. Aromas of Caramel, slight chocolate, and bigh pacific northwest hops. Flavor is toffee, caramel, citrus hops, vanilla, and oak. Smooth on the palate and quite a complex barleywine. Enjoyable! Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA Jan 9, 2007 Batch 4, courtesy of Pailhead. Murky medium reddish-brown. Minimal head, fades to film/ring rather quickly. Hige bourbon nose, although the label stated wine barrels. Don’t get any vinous notes whatsoever. Flavor much the same, sour-mash bourbon, with huge oak/woodiness to it. As it warms continues to sour. Tad dissapointed. jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA Dec 31, 2006 From a 12 oz. bottle with an unnotched spawned on date.
Poured a reddish caramel brown with a small foamy head that settled into a thin bubbly lacing.
Aromas of caramel with a light chocolate, vanilla, a subtle citrus and whiffs of a sherry barrel-like alcohol.
Moderate carbonation and crisp, alcoholic dry, smooth medium-light bodied mouthfeel.
Tastes of roasted nuts, caramel and toffee, a mild vanilla, bitter citric hops, a sherry-like fruitiness, a clear grainy alcohol flavor that is also warming in the palate, and a dry, hop bitter, malty finish with a lingering grainy alcohol.
A decent barley wine that I wish I knew it’s bottling date, easy sipping drinkability.
hophead75 (1945), Boonton, New Jersey, USA Dec 10, 2006 Thanks to Eyedrinkale for sharing this at the CL RB gathering. 2002 bottle. At first I thought I detected some brett in the aroma/taste then realized it was the tannic qualities from the wood. Pours a deep hazy amber. Aroma is wood, sweet malts, some vinous fruit, pretty complex. The taste follows suit with sweet malts in harmony with wood, tannins, and vinous fruits. Whiskey undertones in the finish.
