COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all. Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

bought the bottle as an xmas present for my dad - but figured I really should try it first. had at room temperature. syrupy and a little sweat - but not cloying. nice oakiness. hops are present - but in the background. good maltiness - alcohol taste is there - but at reasonable levels. wonderfully easy drinking - very very nice.

Bottle shared at BBF 6, 26/09/14. Murky chestnut brown meets dark orange with a moderate off white covering. Nose is dark fruit rinds, spice, fruit cake, brown sugars, light roast. Taste comprises sweetish licks, toffee, toasted brown sugar, fruit loaf, spice. Medium + body, fine carboantion, lightly warming booze in the close. Ok barley wine but far from the great the rating on this one suggest it is!

26/IX/14 - 75cl bottle @ Borefts 2014 (Bodegraven) - BB: n/a, 2000 vintage (2014-1067) Thanks to fonefan for sharing the bottle!

Little cloudy amber to brown beer, small irregular yellowish head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: bit oxidized, caramel, sweet, sugary, dried fruits, orange peel, fruity notes. MF: soft carbon, medium to full body. Taste: pretty oxidized, caramel, sweet, sugary, nice sour twist.

Sampled from bottle @ Borefts 2014. Murky brownish color, small off-white head. Aroma is malts, sweetness, overripe fruits. Tastes about the same: malts, sweetness, overripe fruits, lightly sweet-bitter. Medium body and carbonation. Dont specifically get any barrel aging, and there is some oxidation, but certainly still a nice beer after all those years (bottle from 2000).

750 ml. bottle @ Borefts 2014. Thank you fonefan! 2000 Vintage. Batch 2. Dark brown amber, head only on sides. Good oxidation in the nose, maple, sugar, caramel, figs leaves, surprisingly solid still for the age. Warming mocha taste, leaves, berries, creamy malt, caramel, Lower carbonation. Has held up surprisingly well for 14 year old beer. Nice. Must have been stellar couple of years ago.

UPDATED: FEB 7, 2015 2000 vintage At BBF 2014 . Pours murkey brown , small white head . Smell is sweet, aged, harsh . Taste is sweet , bitter, madeira . Passed its prime , but still enjoyable 1999 version . Taste is simmilar . Maybe a bit more intense than I remember the 2000 to be ( several months between both tastings ) . Id give the same score

2002 Red Wine Barrel
Tasted on 2/8/14 from a bottle at the RBWG Grand Tasting, massive thanks to springslicker for sharing this huge whale!!! Pours murky caramel brown with some white bubbles that quickly disappear. The nose is nicely vinous, tart fruit, with oxidized caramel aroma. The flavor is the same red wine oak with nutty oxidation, and some caramel malt. The body is medium with no carbonation and a long vinous and caramel malt finish.
