Commercial Description:
Bottled November 2004, Batch 5. With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all. Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

i had the first sip out of the bottle and i thought it was going to be black colored yet when i poured it after that it was a very hazy dark amber color.very very sweet aroma, lots of sugar and molasses and brown sugar. very thick sugary brew that could probably use some age to develop those sugars.

Bottle from November 2005. Pours with a large, creamy off-white heead covering a hazy orange body. Good lacing. Aroma has lots of malts, caramel, floral hops, and some grains. Taste is caramel malty with some burnt malts as well. A bit of sherry towards the finish and a slight alcohol burn. Not a very full mouthfeel, actually a bit thin for a barely wine. light bubbles. Not horrible, actual a solid beer, would be nice if it were cheaper, more common and came in six packs (ala SN Bigfoot).

Pour is amber brown with a creamy head. Aroma is very malty with strong toffee notes. Flavor is slightly burnt but mainly full of toffee and malt. I got a little bit o cocoa and slight dark fruits which finished with some medium bitterness. Pretty good beer. Alcohol is hidden well. Well blended brew. Could actually use a little more alcoholic kick. Good purchase.

Pours a hazy dark brownish red with head that resembles a very small soapy film. Aroma of brown sugar, fruits, rasins, and caramel with some earthy aromas. Wow this is easy to drink for it’s strength..... flavors of caramel, rasins and other dark fruits, toffee, brown sugar all come out and there is a touch of hop bitterness at the finish. Very english style and not a bad barleywine.

From mcbackus via trade. The pour was ruby and brown in color, kind of dull actually. The head was compact, off-white and produced flecks of lacing. The aroma was lots of malt and sugar with minimal hops coming through. The flavor was sweet caramel maltiness, light fruit and not nearly enough in the hop department to make this anything more than an average BW. The mouthfeel was on the thin side and I found it almost too drinkable, not chewy or big, just OK.
