Bottled November 2004, Batch 5. With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all. Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

Not a bad beer at all...garnet in color with a light tan head. Aroma is dominated by sweet malt; honey, molasses, toffee, and caramel. Flavor follows the nose but also exhibits a slight hop bitterness. Definitely above average but far from a must try.

355 ml bottle @ hotel room, Los Angeles. Bottled 11/20XX (no vintage found)
Pours clear copper color with a small head. Toffee on the nose mostly, faint cardboard, caramel malts and ripe fruits. Toffee flavor, caramel malts, some sugary notes and cardboard. A bit too old unfortunately.

355 ml bottle. Vintage 2011. Enjoyed at Los Angeles, CA. Pours a dark Cooper colour with a small foamy head. Aroma of toasted malts, bread, gooseberries and grass. Flavour of strong toasted malts, resiny bitterness, grass, English toffee, floral notes and even mild coffee notes. Medium bodied and rather velvety mouthfeel. Good.

Pours reddish orange with a small head. Aroma of caramely malts, toffee, biscuits, syrup and chewy candy. Taste is smooth, caramely and heavy with syrup, biscuits, candy and toffee notes. Finish is sweet, stuffy and caramely. Heavy.

35,5 cl bottle @ hotel room, Los Angeles. Bottled Nov, no other freshness info found. Aroma is somewhat musty with ripe fruits and raisins. Also licorice. Flavour has licorice, odd plastic tones, fruit candy and harsh malt. Also marmalade and toffee. Unusual, perhaps a bit past its prime?

2005 Bottle from Mike’s Barleywine tasting, thanks for the opportunity! Rich fruit and caramel with some faint cardboard and sherry notes. Decent aged barleywine.

Reviewed from notes. Growler share. My portion was poured into a chalice. The appearance was a hazy burnt orange to ruddy brown color with a slim finger’s worth of white foaminess that quickly dissipated leaving barely any lacing. The smell was slightly boozy caramel, lightly roasted coffee to a rich nuttiness. The taste was mainly sweet with the boozy caramel coming about into the coffee - esque and almost a tad of woody, slightly tobacco. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sipping quality about it. The carbonation seemed appropriately styled and was good to me. Overall, I say this was a pretty good barleywine that I would have again.

"the one i had was almost more of the english style...less on the hops...thick, big on malt. the hops that were there were not of the west coast floral variety, but were quite bitter. decent balance, good overall, but i’ve had better."

650ml bomber pours a cloudy amber orange color with a finger of white head that leaves some thin spotted lacing on the glass. Aroma is light fruits and grains with some citrus and earthy notes. Taste is a fruity and malty sweetness with hints of chocolate and an earthy and citrus hop bitterness. Medium bodied with mild carbonation. Overall, an aggressively hopped barley that was greatly appreciated and recommended for other beer lovers to sample.

Bottle from BevMo, Sacramento. Pours dark brown with a tiny beige head and a treacle and citrus aroma. There is a rather flat nutty chocolate malt flavor with a hoppy bitter finish.

12oz bottle from Wade’s Wines. I think age might have dimmed this one over 7 years. There is almost no aroma at all. The flavor was still nice and carmelly. Also no hint of the 10ABV. Good but time has passed it by.
