COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed using Pale malt, Honey malt, aromatic malt, Belgian candy sugar, Styrian Golding hops and, of course, Belgian Abbey yeast, Monkfish stands firmly in the Belgian triple tradition. And remember: Whereas triple ale is the soul of the Belgian favorite, Carbonnade a la Flamande, this classic stew is made all the better by two bottles of Monkfish—one for the pot, the other for your glass.

Pours a hazy golden orange with a white frothy hat that leaves some lacing. Aroma of honey, sweet fruity esthers, some alcohol and a hint of spicy yeasty esthers. Taste is fruity esthers, spice and some alcohol with a slight warming. Overall fairly smooth for the 9 percent abv.

Bottle from Sprout’s in Eastlake: Appeared as a hazy golden liquid with a soapy topping of head quickly broke down leaving the tripel naked. Aroma is mild with a malty nose of grains and grass while a notice of alcohol comes through. The flavor is all grains, wheat, and other bread like characteristics that trick me into thinking this is a golden blonde ale style and not a Belgian style tripel.

650 ml bottle. Pours a murky gold with light head. Light aromas of yeast, spice malt, and a touch of lemon. Taste is similar with the addition of orange and ginger, a little toffee and hoppy finish. Not a big Belgian, but nice.

Draft. Poured pale gold with a medium-sized white head. Aroma was moderately malty with some grassy, slightly spicy hops. Quite bitter flavor, sort of like an IPA triple. Reminiscent of La Chouffe Houblon, but not as good. Muted banana, clove. Some nice earthy yeastiness. Medium mouthfeel.

650ml bomber pours a slightly hazy golden color with a 2 finger white head that retains well and leaves some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is light fruits and malts with some yeast and citrusy hops. Taste is a light fruity and malty sweetness and a citrusy hop bitterness that is very well balanced. Medium bodied with adequate carbonation leaving a nice tingle on the tongue. A very well done Belgian style tripel and highly recommended to sample.

Bomber from Hayduke. This beer pours clear golden. A small white head. Light lacing. Wheat, fruit, and yeast in the aroma but it is not big. This is a bit hot. Alcohol is definitely noticed. Some grass and lemon flavors, honey, Belgian yeast, and wheat. Fruity esters. Just a hint of pepper spices and some faint barnyard effects and nice malt for a backbone. I wish this beer had more going on but it is not bad.

Had this one on tap at BeerRevolution in Calgary. The pour is a bright amber body with a finger of off white head. Lacing rings stick all along the glass. The nose is typical for a Tripel with nice lemony notes, hints of banana, clove and coriander. A mild malt in the middle with a nice spiced note of coriander, clove and honey. Quite sweet in the middle with nice light malts and a surprisngly hoppy finish. Nice and dry on the finish with nice spice in the aftertaste and an alcohol warmth.

Pours deep gold into a snifter. White head recedes to hug rim. Sweet tropical fruit and yeast aromas. Soft with sweet candi and yeast front to back. Dry lasting finish.

22 oz. bottle, pours a clear golden with a tiny white head. Aroma of floral hops, yeast, and sweet malts similar to honey. Flavour of semi-sweet apples / apple juice, floral notes, honeyed malt and subtle Belgian yeast - quite unpronounced yeastiness for the style. Sub-par for the style but quite decent.
