Black with small tan head. Nose of alcohol and brown sugar, light roast. Flavor start bland sweet malt, lasting roasty bitterness in finish. The alcohol presence is too prominent, leaving this offering undercarbonated and syrupy. A big disappointment actually.

orange, alcohol, ammonia, soy and some roastiness to the aroma. Opaque black with low tan-brown head that recedes to swirling cover and ring. Orange-citrus hops, strong roasty bitterness and huge syrupy sweetness that perhaps need more time to get to know each other. Simple and very drinkable. Strong alcohol warming. Medium-full body with slick texture and low carbonation. Bottle (Batch 5, Nov-04) sampled with beerbuzzmontreal, MartinT, Olivier_MTL, Rastacouere and Yowie.

A: A beautiful looking pour from a 12 oz bottle. The beer is black and viscous with a finger’s worth of tan head. S: The smell is a bit of a let down, especially considering my hopes for this beer. There is a fair amount of alcohol and acidity to the nose which sort of overpower even the coffee and chocolate. T: There isn’t any improvement in the flavor, I’m afraid. A strong bitterness to the beer and an almost medicinal astringency. Behind that, the chocolate and coffee flavors do come out, but I’m having trouble getting past the faults. M: At least the mouthfeel is nice. This is a full bodied beer with low to moderate carbonation. D: Just too much unwanted and unpleasant bitterness in this beer to overlook it. Hopefully I just got a bad bottle, but as for now, I don’t think I’ll have this beer again.

Opaque black stout. Smooth semi dry palate. Rich dark malt. Traces of smoke and cherry. Has a bitterish finish which jars a bit with the smoothness of the start.

Nov 2006 bottle from PP bottle shop. Poured into Chimay glass leaving 5mm of yeasty liquid in the bottle. Black with medium bubble head that quickly fades to a single small cloud in the middle of a black lake of beer. The aroma is mild of some yeast and roastiness. The flavor is dry and harsh. Like licking an ashtray..worthy of a top 50 beer, but not for me. Yuck. I generously give it a 2.6.

Bring back the oak wine barrels....PLEASE. I was blown away by how much this beer had changed. I credited some of it to the fact that this particular batch was 2 years younger then the ’oak aged’ batch’s I’ve become accustomed to. But there is no excuse for me wanting to drain pour my glass. Dark pour, looked similar. Aroma was even ok, but lacking something... alcohol and malts mostly noticable. Taste was of smoke, some licorice, and some off tasting chocolate notes. Still appreciate Footbalm sending a bottle out my way so I could taste the difference.
