COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Born in Head Brewer Tony Powell’s home brewery, this West Coast Style Imperial Red Ale is a hearty celebration of the brewing art. Almost welcoming you, four hops impart floral, citrus and sprucy Northwest notes to open the festivities. Then, seven malts and flaked barley dance happily across your palate. In the finish Starfish waves a crisply fond farewell. Convivially forthright without cloying agendas, Starfish is like time well spent with your future best friend.

Growler from Breeze-IN, Juneau AK. This was poured into a tulip. A nice looking dark red color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute leaving some clingy speckled lacing clinging around the glass in a speckled sort of way. The smell started off with a fairly nice sweet citrus leading to combined cocoa covered pine. Light sharp sprucing so rolls about. The taste was sweet and sharp spicy sprucy pine. The cocoa only comes in after a bit of warming. Sticky sweet citrus and slightly cocoa aftertaste which is pretty nice. Sweet dry cocoa finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the palate with a mostly sipping quality to it. It seemed appropriately carbonated for its style. Overall, I say this was a pretty good American Strong Ale that I would have again.

I have tried for many years to find this beer and buy a decent quantity of it. Any time I do, it’s usually a single 22oz.... That being said, the initial pour is a orange-like tone, nice ’n malty, but not too overbearing. Smooth medium/heavy bodied, with a nice thick feel. Definitely one of my favourite beers I have ever come across. 5/5.

Red orange pour. Aroma citrus grapefruit hops, caramel malts. Tastes strange vegetal- cactus-spruce savory. Tobacco. Clean. Drying palate with hops on finish.

Deep reddish brown pour. Smokey malty and sweet. Both the nose and taste. Good, not great.

Pours a reddish cooper with a one finger with decent lacing. Aroma is of caramel, toffee, sweet malts, pine, floral hops, and some toasted bread. Taste is pretty similar to the aroma with the addition of some citrus and spruces notes. Has a medium-full body with a semi creamy mouthfeel and a semi bittier, medium-long, slightly boozy finish. Overall, a pretty tasty strong ale that is defintly on the maltier side of the style’s spectrum.

Pours a reddish brown with a small beige head. Aroma is caramel and toffee with pine and floral hop notes. Taste is a warming caramel and toffee hop flavours well balanced with floral and pine hop bitterness.

Bottle from Texas Liquor: Aroma was a sweet base of syrupy malts that is heavily unbalanced towards the heavy amount of hops added. Appeared as deep dark amber almost a stained mahogany color and created a minimal amount of foam on top. The flavor is a rich semi sweet taste of sugar from some off beat malts that I find to be unique since they have no evidence of caramel/toffee malts that I would have expected. However, a light use of hops comes through that give off a little bit of a black tea flavor comes through in the finish.

My Bottom Line:
Candied fruit and caramel greet green hoppiness and its coniferous bitterness in this textbook Imperial Red Ale.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam tops the misty orange-hued red.
-Hops could have been brighter, to my tastes in the style.
-Drinkability is rather high for this type of brew.
-Malts are as well developed as hops in this one.
-The flavour profile is balanced.

Bottle.

Sets up in the glass nicely, sparkling liquid, amber, some head. Light caramel aromas, biscuit, toast, cereal, pine and light citrus amply emanating from the glass. Lightly creamy feel, cleanish. Finishing lightly sweet, lightly tangy. A very solid beer -- not too sweet, good balance of a nice hop mix with firm cereal complements.
