Black color with feint white head. Strong aroma of sweet piney hops. Easy drinking palate as the beer goes down like a porter with mellow toasted chocolate malt flavors . A fresh hoppy bite at the end with some cola in the finish.

Forgotten review from May 9, 2011. Swordfish pours a dark brown with a two finger thick, creamy beige head with good lacing on the glass. The nose is quite strong with a perceived NW resinous hop, a large herbal note and a dark roasty malt. note of cocoa, burnt espresso and lightly fruity notes. The taste is superb with a bold roast and malt profile that balances well with a medium hop bitterness and a beautiful pine and grapefruit hop taste on the finish. Notes of pine, citrus, toast and biscuit are also found. Medium to full bodied with a beautiful drinkable taste and nice balance for a Black IPA.

A: The beer pours a very dark brown color with a tan head and some moderate lacing.
S: Herbal hops and pine up front, a little bit of grapefruit and orange peel, too. Finally, at least a respectable amount of hop character. But, the victory is short lived. The roast really takes over and dominates the rest of the nose.
T: The flavor offers up some of the same attributes. Herbal, piney, and lightly citrusy hops. Grapefruit and orange peel with a ligh malt sweetness and bread note. Still pretty roasty with some malt bitterness.
M: Medium bodied with medium to high carbonation.
O: Nowhere near as awful as some of the other Northwest IPAs I had, but not something I’d care to come back to.

A decent Black IPA. Lots of roast and the smell draws you in. slightly less than average mouthfeel, 60 IBU though bitterness seems less than that perhaps four months has made a difference. Lacey, dark appearance. More roasted malt than anything. Not as good as the smell would lead you to believe.

I really have a high bar for the CDA and this one reaches but doesn’t quite make it. This one falls to far on the malty side for me. Bitterness needs to be amped a bit.

Bomber from MSM. Clear dark amber pour with a brief tan head leaving heavy lace. Resinous, IPA-like nose. Smooth, medium body and fine carbonation. Starts citrus, chocolate, spruce and tangy and finishes darker and more bitter: burnt toast and coffee. A dark-roasted malt bed underlies, but the hop profile is citrus and resin. Very pleasant, the Reel Ales series has another hit!

Bber bought in Carlsbad; big roasted aroma and a thick dark pour. Great taste a bitter IPA with roasted malt and a thick texture. Very enjoyable beer while grilling steaks on vacation.
