COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
To celebrate our 3,000th batch of beer we present Batch 3,000! BATCH 3000 (ABV 6 %, Color 25 srm, IBU 26, Spices: Fresh Black Peppercorns, Aging: Woodford Reserve Bourbon Barrel) This Belgian style Black Saison is brewed with pale malts, and chocolate malts to impart a dark color and cocoa-like flavor. Belgian yeasts create strong ester fruity notes and crushed black peppercorns are added to the brew during fermentation. “The resulting slight spiciness,” say Hoops, “balances the dark flavors perfectly. Post fermentation we moved this beer into bourbon barrels filled with fresh peppercorns. “This special beer is our 3,000th batch since we began brewing in 1997.” Sales of this very special, very limited ale are restricted to on-site only—sorry no growlers.

Sampled at FOBAB, Chicago, 2011. Holy peppercorn! Its been sometime since a peppercorn ale hit me like this one does. Creamy, buttery popcorn and peppercorn describe the nose if put simply, but that description really doesn’t do justice. Basically, it’s almost impossible for me to stop sniffing this one. Aroma is truly amazing... Now to the rest of the beer, which is all that bad either. Pour is pretty with a milky, cream head, sticky, frothy lacing, and oaky brown body. The feel i orders of magnitude more subtle than the aroma, but its hard to say that’s necessarily a bad thing. Mild buttery cream, a light bourbon, a light funky olive, and a light nuttiness are the supporting characters. The prickly spicy pepper linger though out, then set up camp in the long, yet mellow aftertaste. Overall, this is a very tricky one to rate, and even more difficult to compare. I’ll just leave at that this was a great experience and give it a 4.0.

FOBAB 2011. Pours a cloudy, very deep brown, almost black colored body with a finger-width, creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves lots of lacing. Aroma is awesome. Tooons of peppercorn with a touch of smooth butter coating. Not overpowering at all despite the blast of peppercorn. Fruity saison esters with a lactic funk and oak. A light grainy cocoa comes out more as this warms with some toast. Flavor doesn’t quite live up to the awesome aroma, but is still pretty solid. Lots of fruity esters and funk up front with some lactic sourness, a lighter oak, and a hint of bourbon coming out in the middle. Finishes with a clean estery funk, a touch of cocoa, and some oaky bourbon that dries and leaves a lengthy aftertaste. Ah, so this is where all the peppercorn comes in. I thought it disappeared for a second there, but it really comes out nicely in the aftertaste. Leaves a very lengthy lingering flavor. Medium-light body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty interesting beer. The aroma was awesome with tons of balanced peppercorn and funk while the flavor was more sour, estery, and funky with the peppercorn coming on nicely in the aftertaste. A very hard beer to fully grasp, but I really liked it.

Sampled from the tap at 2011 FOBAB. Poured a cloudy deep brown with a brown head that dissipated slowly to the edges. Aroma had a note of coffee, sweet dark grains, and sourness with a hint of spice, odd. Flavor had more sour dark fruits with a bit of backing sweet grains and spice. A really odd combination that didn’t really work for me.

On tap (FoBAB 2011) : The aroma is peppery and floral with some mild chocolate. It’s a dark brown with orange highlights and a small beige head. The flavor starts with a some quick roasty chocolate followed by some pepper and light sour lemon. The pepper lingers on the tongue for a little while. It’s medium bodied with light carbonation. Overall, it’s interesting, but sour and roasty rarely work for me.

Fitgers batch 3000 sampled at 2011’s FOBAB... Pours a mostly opaque deeper mahogany with a creamy light beige head... Buttery roast with a raspberry profile underneath and loads of toffee and caramel. Touch of Brett... Flavors are red fruit and Brett. Tangy for sure with a creamy body wit a touch of acidic bite. Lighter bodied. Pretty good. 7/4/7/4/15

Sampled on tap at FoBAB 2011 (Chicago, IL). Pours a murky brownish pour, darkeer edges with a frothy tannish head that dies to a film, laces ok. Aromas are sour lactic acid and peppercorns, touches of oak, with vanilla, touches of dry funk, dust, and some toastiness. Very nice. Initial is a decent sourness up front, lemons and barrel, touches of spice, toast, more sour lemons and citrus. A vibrant nose leads into a good sourness up front, trailing into some gentle still sour slightly malty middle and some lingering balck pepper and lemons on the finish. Pretty good, vibrantly sour with some earthy ash and smoke. Pretty nice, earthy and sour.
