4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 BBB63 (5039) - La Porte, USA - SEP 5, 2005
Rating #10 for this beer, brought by TAR to the Labor Day gathering, much thanks!
The beer poured pitch black with a minimal head but has a nice oily coating on the glassware. The aroma has notes of prune, fig, heavy roasted malt, espresso, very earthy yeast esters, and even a bit woody. The taste is what I really love about this beer has it delivered a big WOW of intense flavors. Very charred and massive espresso notes. If you give it a chance some ripened fruits and spice comes around for a brief moment before the vinous and woody finish added to my pleasure. The feel is biting and sticky, lush and a bit warming but I would not guessed it to be 9.5% ABV. This is one top-notch imperial. I gotta get to Minnesota one of these days, summer time of course.

This sounds like something I would have ordered. Maybe I did, maybe I didn’t. Either way, knowing Fitger’s, this beer has to be good.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 IlanMan (1015) - Appleton, Wisconsin, USA - JUL 15, 2009
Growler. Pour was very dark and thick with a full dark tan head. Aroma was of chocolate, roasted malt, light coffee, and some vanilla. Body was medium to full and very smooth with a light carbonation. All of the flavors blended together very well creating an amazing brew. I would definitely buy again.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Skyview (4880) - Papoose Jct, Minnesota, USA - OCT 14, 2007
Sampled on draught at the Fitger’s Brewhouse in Duluth, MN. Pours an opaque dark brown brew with a fast dissolving tan head. Aroma of dark roasted black malt, vanilla, some coffee, dark chocolate and molasses. Taste is full bodied, very light carbonation, with flavors of dark chocolate, burnt and toasted malt, coffee and some roasted nuts. Finish is semi-sweet, flowery hoppy with a decent dark toasted malt aftertaste.

16 oz. swing-top hand-bottle from Robertsreality, thanks Rob. very, very dark pour, no chance of any light getting thru this stuff. aroma is of sweet molasses, some coffee and a hint of vanilla. flavor is of bittersweet chocolate, molasses, coffee and even a bit of whiskey. looooong after-taste of the bitter choco/coffee, palate is not really thin, but not as full as many impy’s. I don’t like a lot of carbonation, but this is nearly flat. since it’s hand-bottled, I’m not taking points off for it. a very enjoyable stout.

Pours dark with brown highlights. Aroma of molasses, coffee, dark chocolate, and nutty. Flavor follows aroma very well. A bit thin for a stout but delicious all the same.

Very dark, little head. Nose smoky and nutty. Flavor rich and sweet, quite dry, lots of nuts to it with some powdery smoke. Long aftertaste, very ashy, some tobacco. Dark fruit there, but more molasses-sweet. Oddly watery for an imperial stout.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Styles (2014) - Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA - NOV 14, 2005
Handbottled sample courtesy of TAR. Pours dark oily black with very little carbonation. Lots of biteersweet coffee and chocolate throughout the aroma and flavor. Flavor fades to all dry bitter coffee. Long lingering coffee aftertaste.

Originally rated Jun 28, 2005. This really needed to be split from the original rating, because this age has suffered and was dragging down my score of the other. They 2003 vintage was "soyed" out. It had become a carbonationless, soy syrup, with little left of it’s original brightness and posterity. Nonetheless, it’s still a respectable brew, but aging hasn’t improved this one at all. Especially since it hasn’t sat in any special container. It just stewed, losing much of it’s special hop character and alcohol brightness. Extremely savory. Earlier Rating: 2/14/2005 Total Score: 4 Pitch black. Amber foam with nice lacing. Woody, earthy aroma with chocolate and coffee wisps. Astonishingly complex. Coffee and cream, with dark cherries. Sharp and bright on the palate. Toasty. Fades a little too fast. Smacks of savory teriyaki vegetables. Originally rated Jun 28, 2005.
