[Tap] Part of the brewpub sampler. Pours a shade of amber with a small amount of off-white head. Wonderful aroma of smoked malts and light spice. This beer was very well balanced, with a great Octoberfest character to it. Lots of bready malts and some sweet caramel in addition to just the right amount of smoke. Unlike a lot of smoked beers, this one doesn’t immediately remind you of eating sausage or ham. It has more of a pure wood smoke character that I really enjoyed. This was probably my favorite beer from my visit to Fitger’s.

On draught during Great Taste of Midwest 2009 in Madison, Wisconsin. Pours a semi-hazy caramel amber brew with a thick beige head that hold a lasting retention. Aroma of smoked caramel malt, some light pear, sweet sugar cookie dough and a touch of roasted nuts. Taste is smooth, creamy, medium bodied, with flavors of smoked caramel malt, some apple/pear fuit, flowery hops and a touch of cotton candy. Finish is semi-sweet with a smoked caramel aftertaste that slowly disappears.

Beer #28 at GTMW ’09. It’s quarter to four, you can start to smell the desperation of people trying to get in as many beers as possible before the fest ends at 6:00. Märzen color, light brown, very clear, with a thick head. Smell is smoky but not bacony. A little malt smell, too. But a lot of smoke in taste, even though I keep trying the smoked beers, it gets a little tiring here.

On tap today at the brewpub. Nice amber pour, minimal carbonation and the famliar aroma of octoberfest mixed in with a little smoke. Flavor was very good, plenty of caramel, plenty of malt and finishes smoky, but not overpowering. I love smoked beers, but can see this one as a good stepping stone for anyone just starting to try them.

On tap at the brewpub. Nice pig fat heavy aroma. A bit greasy. Campfire and barbeque. Nice and heavy. Pours a clearish, slightly hazed orange amber, with little head. Flavor is rich and juicy. Nice terse smoke plays off a good malt base, a bit of carameled sugar and some sweet alder branches. A bit of birch smoke and some faint toasted almond character. A very nice smoked beer!

Tap at the brewpub. Medium brown with a red tint to it and a nice off-white head. Light smokiness, some toast as well. Caramelly flavor, light fruit, but not much smoke, good drinker though.
