3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Perkeo (321) - Portland, Oregon, USA - OCT 15, 2003
Dense looking brown/ amber with a compact tan head; tofee and caramel aromas, with light fusel and some cherry ester. Smooth on the palate, but fairly dry and thin, with a tofee flavor hardly a hint of the high alcohol. Nice aftertaste, but it takes a while to acumulate. Could have some more malt complexity, but a pretty nice beer, I also tried an oak aged(new oak, 3rd or 4th time used) version that took very well to the treatment, the added vanilla and tannic backbone really fleshed out this beer, it was a very nice neutral strong lager for barrel ageing.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 beermatrix (1497) - Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA - OCT 14, 2003
What's this? A triple bock in a MN brewpub? Well lets see...color is a caramel brown with a bit of a chill haze and goldish highlights. Small, fluffy, but densly thick bone white head; the lace in hefty sticking thin sheets that don't budge. Smell is very light of toffee and caramel some dried fruit sweetness and a bit of alcohol comes out when swirled. Taste is incredibly mellow and creamy smooth with good alcoholic brandy-like warmth that comes through right away. Malts are light with soft caramel and toffee, notes of hazelnuts linger along with a bit of peppery spice. Feel is substantially thin for a T bock, quite light, smooth for sure, close to getting medium at the midway point with nice warmth and a pleasing mellow finish. Took no time to finish this off due to its lack of complexity and boldness. Sure goes goes down easy, way to easy, the 10% takes hold quickly as it was consumed by yours truly within about 3 minutes. Even though it was a cinch to drink, for a triple bock, its missing by a good portion of complextity and malt heft compared to most other dubblebocks or even some great bocks.
