Great beer! Always excited when this is on tap! I wish this is one they had year round!

On draught at the Fitger’s brewpub in downtown Duluth, MN. Pours a clear, near opaque dark reddish brown colored brew with a creamy off-white head that has some nice retention and lacing. Aroma of toasted dark malt, a hint of coffee, some roasted nuts and light grapefruit. Taste is medium bodied, flavors of toasted dark malt, a hint of grapefruit, coffee and and light chocolate. Finish has a mild citrus bitterness with a lingering toasted dark malt/coffee aftertaste. One of the more hoppier porters I’ve tried.

Very dark brown with a short lasting head. Definitely walnuts and a little coffee and chalk. Just enough innocuous hops to balance. OK, not real special

REAL ALE TENT @ GTMW 2008: Dark brown and very good head and lace. The aroma has notes of prune, walnut, caramel and chalky yeast esters. The taste is twangy and fruity on top of dark dry malts, woody finish. The mouth feel is soft and smooth. An okay porter, you could worse.

On cask at GTMW. Poured clear medium-deep brown with a loose cap of off-white head. The aroma picked up toasty lighter chocolate and caramel notes joined by a faint, well-placed smoky presence.. solid. The flavor had caramel and semi-sweet chocolate at the core with dry coffee and earthy bitterness around.. dry, lighter, non-descript finish. Lighter-bodied and dry on the palate with a nice choice of malts, but perhaps not enough of them especially toward the back.. this may have been better with a little CO2 behind it.

UPDATED: OCT 22, 2006 I can’t find this on the Fitger’s website but there are a few references to this beer on the Internet. It looks like a tribute to someone at Fitger’s. Anyway, it is a better than average porter. This beer has substantial palate, but it is not as thick as their stout. The beer is black and has a small head. Some dried fruit in the aroma, and roasted malt and light, sweet fruit in the flavor.
