3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 OSLO (1133) - Ames, Iowa, USA - APR 3, 2010
[Growler, thanks philsner!] Pours a deep copper color with an off-white, long lasting head. Beer is dominated by biscuity malt with great floral hoppiness offsetting it perferctly. Medium mouthfeel and smooth. An exceptionally drinkable beer that doesn’t amaze, but that goes down with incredible ease.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Skyview (4880) - Papoose Jct, Minnesota, USA - MAY 4, 2008
On draught at the brewpub in downtown Duluth, Minnesota. Pours a semi-clear copper amber brew with a fast dissolving off-white head that dissipates to a fine film. Aroma of sweetened caramel malt, a touch of honey, some flowery hops, and a touch of spice. Taste is medium bodied, light carbonation with flavors of spiced caramel malt, honey, some dark pitted fruits and a touch of allspice. Finish is semi sweet with a light caramel and flowery hop aftertaste.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 19/20 detroiter (958) - Euphoria, Minnesota, USA - JAN 22, 2007
Pours a clear burnt orange color, with a sparse and very short-lived head. Zero lacing. Sweet dark honey in the aroma.
This beer is nowhere near as sweet as I expected it to be based upon the aroma. Light caramel malt, dry toasted malt, a honey-like flavor similar to a fine mead, some oak, and a tart hopping. Alcohol a-plenty combines with honey and hops in the aftertaste.
Medium to full body, light carbonation.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 Pigfoot (2267) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - JUN 28, 2006
Deep, murky, muddy amber hue...a rich, ripe bronze...one or the other. Slim, solid head at the start, but gone quickly.
Sweet, malty aroma, mild fruit, muted caramel, lightly herbal...rich. bright, classy.
Nice and creamy on the tongue, grainy mouthfeel, large malt...this is a maibock to contend with, unlike any I’ve ever had. Strength kicks in early. I’m feeling the 7.5%, easily.
Tastes great, though, and that’s the dilly in this pickle. I want to keep on tasting it, and the booze factor roars in too mightily to make that a wise path to travel upon.
Tangy fruitiness meets considerable malt, yummy on the tongue, and immediately drying, leading to a sophisticated turnout.
Quite a fine maibock, no surprise coming from a Hoops.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 robertsreality (2460) - Minnesota, USA - APR 1, 2006
Orange/Amber Coloring with White Ring. The Aroma and Flavor Reminded me of Saison Characteristics...Herb/Vegetably, Bitter...but Round Solid Malty Wrapping Around Semi-Elusive Honey Notes and Bittersweet Flavors. Nice Maibock!
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 badgerben (4116) - Blaine, Minnesota, USA - MAR 31, 2006
Growler. Copper color with no head. Aroma is an odd mix of vegetables with a lingering sweetness. Taste has the expected base of malt but has a little bit of an off-putting sourness. Almost nutty finish.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 auerbrau (2666) - Peace Dale, Rhode Island, USA - MAR 17, 2006
Pours a clouded deep orange, with a yellow fringe. Topped with a creamy white head. Slightly sour lemon and orange aroma with mixed sweet graininess. Flavor is at first wickedly sweet; very mead like with plentiful sugars from the honey dose. Cloying. Sticky. But delicious. Very satisfying flavor. Palate is a raucous part of sweet clear crystalline malt sugars and more lemon-like honey. But, wait! There’s a growing dryness, some acerbic bitters...wow. A good run of euro type hops close the deal for complete balance. Very impressive. Outstanding for a Maibock. Replete with a smack of lemongrass.
