Firm mahogany appearance under a milky film. Yeast-forward aroma of doughy fruits powdered in coriander and ground orange peel. Acidic. Anise and black cherry provide a damp, dark intrigue of earth. Hints of chocolate mousse or grenache. Green apple occasionally forces a singular push of tangy sweetness, and it lingers too often to be forgettable.

Flavor has a lot of that dark vinous character that aligns naturally with the layers of spicing for a nice impression. Acidity collects a dustiness and a smokiness of gamey meat when it eases itself into the dark malts, projecting a gorgeous light roasted coffee blend of savory and tart. Mid palate shows a touch of black malt astringency arriving as dead coffee soap.

Clean, soft yeasty palate with a gentle sparkle. Dusty anise and coriander sweetness a calm finish. Rounded and textured, with most of the right elements in place; this is a style that would seem difficult, but here seems not so much.

On draught at the brewpub in Duluth, Minnesota. Pours a semi-clear dark copper brown colored brew with a creamy off-white head that slowly dissipates and leaves behind some excellent lacing. Aroma of roasted dark malt, a hint of banana, Belgian yeast, and chocolate. Taste is medium bodied, with flavors of Belgian yeast, a hint of banana, chocolate, coriander and some dark pitted fruits. Finish is slightly metallic, a touch on the sweet side, with a powdered banana and yeast aftertaste.
