Commercial Description:

Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

12 oz. bottle - pours thin and jet black; roasty and nutty aromas; drinks thin with nutty aftertaste and sweet flavors; very baltic-like

Bottle, 12 oz. Black with tan head. Roasted malts with prunes dominate the flavor. Decent porter.

2008 Bottle - Pours fast with a tan head that appears out of no where, toffee and smoke on the nose, and has a heavy malt aroma, but not in taste. Kinda oily mouth presence, burnt wood and burnt hops, finishes with a wimper. This was pretty decent but isn’t memorable, I might drink again, maybe...

At the Hy Vee CB Stout & Porter tasting. Dark sepia brown in color with a thin ecru-colored head. There’s alcohol and toffee to the aroma. Also strong burnt roastedness. Really good lacing. Astringent finish. Slight bit of heat. Strong nuttiness. Bitterness to the sides of the tongue with residual dryness at the end. A true porter.

Little head and carbonation. Flavor and palate of flat pepsi with tastes of prunes/raisins.

Pours a dark deep brown, clear with a thin cream to light tan head, thin. The nose is rather even and balanced. Light sweetness, dark chocolate, light licorice, very light floral hops. Some roast, very subtle. Lightly creamy. Thinner mouth, not quite watery, low carbonation. The flavors are in line with the nose. This is downright well balanced and enjoyable! Sweet enough to offset the acidity, largely coming from the roast, I think, though the roast isn’t too powerful until the finish, and even then it’s rather subdued for a stout (but stronger than a porter should be). Stronger caramel than chocolate. A bit of strawberry to apple, but not at all in the way of a Belgian. A little licorice. Acidic lightly roasty finish. Very balanced, not a bad beer at all.

12 oz bottle thanks to Suttree. Roasted malt aromas off this brown pour with smallish off-white head. Aromas were said roasted malts and touches of plum or passionfruits. Flavors were nice chocolate and touches of burnt malt. But not overly burnt as to make it too bitter. Some fruitiness came through, but not excessively. Pretty good.

Poured a very dark brown with almost no head, but a ring of lacing retains. Nose is some chocolate, but a woody, slightly oak smell dominates. Tastes of slight chocolate, big wood flavors, and a very oily palate. Got better as it warmed. Decent, but didn’t live up to the hype.
