Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Poured a very dark brown with almost no head, but a ring of lacing retains. Nose is some chocolate, but a woody, slightly oak smell dominates. Tastes of slight chocolate, big wood flavors, and a very oily palate. Got better as it warmed. Decent, but didn’t live up to the hype.

11.2oz bottle-pours a dissipating tan head and black color. Aroma is WOW-off putting, like a drain, then cardboard medium malt-some chocolate/molasses. Taste is cardboard, medium malt-some chocolate/molasses, slight vinegar, yeast. Mild carbonation. Will have to get another bottle and try this again.

Brewed with 1825 yeast salvaged from a sunken vessel in the English Channel using an original 19th century recipe. Pours very dark brown that you can barely see through, even though it is clear. Minimal tan head in my snifter. Nose is very nice. Thick chocolate. Not cocoa powder or beans, but more like a chocolate bar. Flavor is as you would expect from the nose. Nice thick malty tones. Pronounced bitter tone stays firm. For staying power, this one keeps a good score. Feel is thin though on the liquid side. A lot less than you would think, but the carbonation is good. This is a very good English Porter. Definitely worth trying, though I would absolutely love to try an extremely fresh sample of this.

Amazing story to this beer. The story alone should be worth trying this beer. The beer itself was quite watery. However, knowing the english roots of the porter, it may have been too cold when drank. It also had a salinity to it that was odd. Unusual porter for sure by todays standards.

Bottle. Very dark, black beer with little to know head. Aroma is nicely smoked malt with a touch of chocolate. Flavor is of smooth roasted malt nicely balanced with caramel and hops. A little watery for a very nice porter, but a nice smooth drinker.

This is a very nice beer but I was a little dissappointed considering the levity of the sunken vessel story on the bottle. I expected more. It’s still a great beer though. It’s very smooth!

(330 ml bottle from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/maine/portland/ target=blank>Downeast Beverage Co.) Pours dark brown with some lighter brown and rubyish highlights. Three fingers of tan head. Aroma is chocolate and coffee, along with a sort of sweet and sour thing. Mouthfeel fairly smooth, pleasant, very lightly oily, medium-full. Some thick, weepy, rather broken rings of lacing. Flavor is sort of dark and milk chocolate with some coffee. Pretty good but seems a little old and tired compared to alot of fresher, brighter tasting porters I’ve had. Best quality is a nice mouthfeel.
