Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

12 oz bottle courtesy of my cousin Tim. Pours a black color with a medium tan head. Aroma of toasted grains, malt and a slight hint of smoke. Taste is malty dry with hints of coffee beans and toasted grains. Not a bad porter.

1/3 liter bottle with a picture of a clipper ship on the label. Interesting story behind the brewing of this beer. It is a black brew with no suds and a pleasant, yeasty aroma. The sweetness level is low for a porter. I taste yeast, coffee, malt, light hops, and toasted grains in the finish. Very drinkable, and a good all-around brew. It is hard to see how anyone would disapprove of it.

Nice black pour with brown head. Some lacing. Aroma is chocolate and fruity malt. Taste is complex, consisting of vanilla, malt and a dash of hops. Full bodied. Well balanced. Great stuff.

Dark, almost black body with red highlights and a thin tan head. Aroma is delightful. It is if roasted nuts, over ripe dark fruit and vanilla. Feel is smooth and creamy but with no carbonation or hop zing. Barley is prominent in the flavor as well as fruit. It is a sophisticated, complex, and subtle flavor. It is also delicious.

the aroma is of good beer. the taste is of a moderate body with a good finish of berry flavored/type hops. there is a moderately strong malt and barley taste that is quite pleasant. it is really only barely sweet yet the beer is enjoyable and complex (though it is not in you’re face) quite a nice sophisticated english brew with sophisticated balls!

Tasted 12/19/07. 12oz bottle. Pitch brown hue with a minimal tan head. Vanilla and brownies in the nose. Toasty and cocoa. Wonderful wafting aromas. Hints of coffee and toffee. Really nice nose. Medium bodied with toasty cocoa malts. Vanilla and chocolate. Good roasty flavor. Smooth porter! Mild fruity undertones. Super smooth with a woody note. Very nice.

Reddish brown, moderate tan head, good lacing and retention. Aroma is chocolatey, some coffee, lightly sweet finish. Moderate to low hops. Medium to light body. Good English example.

Dark ruby color, small head. Aroma of roasted Nestle Quik. Some caramel and coffee in taste as well. Mild and pleasant but not overly complex. Thin to medium bodied.
