Commercial Description:

Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

The last 4-pack on the shelf at Vieux Carre liquor store in New Orleans. Covered in dust, with a clearly water-damaged box, I bought them with skepticism (see my Breckenridge APA rating and you’ll know why). My suspicions were justified-- all were off but one but one! Pours a deep mahogany with a thin brown pad of a head. Rich aroma of bitter chocolate, cocoa, and ash. Oily mouthfeel, chocolate, leather, wet wood, and a little smokiness in the finish. I really wish I could have brought the other 3 bottles back with me, as this was a real treat.

Dusty bottle of the shelf of the local Binny’s when they were remodeling. Poured a brown hued dark red with a light brown head, laced little. Sweet chocolatey aroma. Roast coffee and toffee flavors on this thin, slightly oily, and mildly bitter brew. Quaffable.

Bottle. Nose is all chocolate with minimal notes of coffee and caramal. Deep amber-brown, cola like dark color with ruby hues. Patchy white head with tight bubbles around the edges. Good flavor but very thin.

12 oz. Mild aroma of chocolate, very little beige head. Flavor is lots of black coffee with some licorice. Feels very thin and wet around mouth. Finishes with burnt roasted malt. A really great porter, but I’m not the biggest porter fan.

11.2oz bottle, no date. Clear deep garnet with a 1 1/2 finger light beige head, pretty decent retention. English aroma of chocolate malts, rich sweet caramel almost to the point of being toffee, lactose, and a bit of sweet raisins. Flavor is much the same with raisin and lactose sweetness and dry char being dominant--the char especially in the finish. Light carbonation with a light body. Very good porter.

Hey guys....Just because this is not an IMPERIAL stout with 8-12% alcohol does not mean that it does not deserve nearly perfect scores. This is a damn near perfect porter. 2nd to Synebrychoff Porter from Finland.
