Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Hey guys....Just because this is not an IMPERIAL stout with 8-12% alcohol does not mean that it does not deserve nearly perfect scores. This is a damn near perfect porter. 2nd to Synebrychoff Porter from Finland.

Had this beer on 1/28/1998. Color is close to the shade of Coke, but has a deep red hue, and carbonation is low with very little head. Aroma is a thin sweet toasted malt scent. Flavor is crisp, mild, and refreshing. It starts off with a light malt flavor, goes down very smooth and clean, and then finishes with a faint smoke or burnt taste. Overall I feel this is a very good BEER, but is a little light as Porters go.

Claimed brewer is Darwin (as "Original Flag Porter"). Dark ruby color, small off-white head. Cocoa and roasted coffee beans in the nose. Sweetish, milk stout -like, roasted coffeish flavor. Good maltyness.

Bottled@SBWF2007. Deep amber colour, mediumsized white head. Aroma is really pleasantly roasted malts, some hoppy bitterness along with mild woodenness. Flavour is quite much the same. The roast stays really long and also has some mild candyish hints.

Milk chocolate is redolent in the nose with a slight leather overtone not unlike an old ale. nice pour with a thick tan head that, sadly, does not stick around very long. Well balanced with the hops mitigating the ample malt, but leaving a mildly sweet dry finish. Dried fruit and earthy hops make an appearance but are tempered by the toasted malt. Medium-bodied, this is an easy drinker and would not offend with lighter fare. but still has enough oomph to stand up to a burger.

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 22 Sep 2007) Dark amber, leather colour with brief, off-white head. Fruity, malty nose with roasted grain and slightly smoky notes. Malty, slightly grainy taste with dark fruit, wild berries and balanced notes of dusty hops. Rather pale for a porter, quite different but enjoyable.

(Bottle at Stockholm Beer Festival 2007) Clear dark brown color, acidic scent. Malty and metallic taste. Spritzy mouthfeel. Low bitterness.
